Today’s Week 3 matchup between the Washington Redskins and the Indianapolis Colts will bring a national audience to the action at FedExField, as Colts quarterback Andrew Luck — the No. 1 pick in April’s NFL Draft — and Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III — the next pick that day — face off the first time as professionals.
The 1-vs.-2 hype has been featured on all of the national stations, including ESPN, who sent George Smith to cover today’s game.
Smith was kind enough to sit down with me a few minutes ago and talk about the game and what he’s looking for from a national perspective, joining Indy Star columnist Bob Kravitz, who spoke with me earlier in the week about the game.
Here’s some snippets from my conversation with Smith. The complete audio interview is below for your enjoyment.
On the unusual hype surrounding a preseason game:
“I know that both guys, Robert and Andrew, have tried to play down the head-to-head thing, but the reality is they went 1 and 2 in the draft, there’s a huge amount of interest and, frankly, both could end up being pretty good starters in the league. I know from ESPN’s perspective, they were talking about for several days.”
On Griffin III and how he is handling everything as a rookie:
“You know, I first met him right after the draft when he came here for the big draft party. He was really composed, he seems way beyond his years in term of his maturity, his savvy. I think he handles all questions from reporters very well, and he’s a colorful character. He’s a guy that, I think, people gravitate to.”
Other than the Griffin III/Luck matchup, what else interests you about this game?
“…these teams are both sort of rebuilding, coming off tough seasons, and just to see how they play, are they in sync, where they’ve improved.”
What kind of condition are the Redskins in this season and beyond?
“Tough to say, that’s why I’m really interested to see how they play. What is it – three of the first four games on the road? So they’ve got some tough challenges going in. I think when you get a guy like RGIII and you’re now in the third year of the Shanahans, it will be interesting to see how they gel and if they can build on what’s happened in the past two years.”
