So it’s probably a good sign that the legendary Washington Redskins coach can’t wait for the Redskins’ regular season to get underway with rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III under center.
Gibbs recently toured the ESPN circuit, appearing on several shows and giving his take on Griffin III and the Redskins.
“I got to tell you my impression [is] everybody’s excited,” Gibbs told “SportsCenter’s” Hannah Storm. “I’m the biggest Redskins fan in the world. I’m around the Redskins all the time. People there in the community, everybody’s fired up about it.”
Gibbs discussed what excites him the most about Griffin III:
“What I like about RG3 is kind of the way he handles himself,” Gibbs said. “He seems to be handling everything great, to burst on the scene like that. He’s a fantastic athlete. … I’m fired up that management there — Bruce [Allen], Dan [Snyder], Mike [Shanahan], everybody — kind of went after him and did what they did.”
Gibbs, of course, won three Super Bowl titles with the Redskins, and said he misses the behind-the-scenes aspects of coaching:
“It’s the the late-night meetings and the coaching staff back there, two o’clock in the morning arguing over stuff,” Gibbs said. “The relationships that you have and I think the relationships with the players. It is fun to be around those people. It’s highly competitive.”
Gibbs also appeared on the ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike” and said he currently gets his football-coaching fix with his 10-year-old grandsons and their friends.
“Now my grandson knows who I am,” Gibbs said. “The other 13 little teammates, they don’t know who I am, care who I am, and they’re not paying attention to anything I say.”
I bet they’ll be in for a shock when it eventually hits them that Joe Gibbs was one of their youth coaches.
