Griffin III, Fletcher Enjoying Chess Matches

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 15, 2012 – 4:26 pm

They’re locker buddies in the Washington Redskins locker room, but on the practice field, veteran linebacker London Fletcher and rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III are all business when lined up against each other.

In fact, oftentimes when Griffin III gets to the line of scrimmage and sees something in the defense that he doesn’t like, he’ll shout out an audible to change things up for the offense. Fletcher, a crafty veteran entering his 15th NFL season, will respond by barking out something to his defense to throw Griffin III off.

It’s this self-described “chess match” that keeps things interesting, Fletcher said Wednesday after practice at Redskins Park.

“It’s about competing on the football field,” Fletcher said. “He makes a move, I make a move. He makes a call, I make a call. That type of thing.”

Fletcher even tweeted about the chess match with Griffin III Tuesday after practice:

The tweet quickly earned a response from his rookie teammate:

Fletcher said he doesn’t save the mind games only for Griffin III — he’s done it against several opposing quarterbacks — but he’s enjoyed seeing how his own quarterback reacts to the banter.

“He made one call, I made another call. He makes another call, I might make another call,” Fletcher said .”It’s a move and a counter-move on the football field.”
