Camp Leftovers: Half Century Of Fanhood

Posted by Brian Tinsman on August 15, 2012 – 7:04 pm

[A tip of the ol' cap to Redskins.com intern Mackenzie Rivers, who did the lion's share of the work on this.]

The very nature of being a sports fan is to be a fanatic.  Most Redskins fans were born that way, but some of them have very cool stories along the way.

During training camp, I had the opportunity to meet such a fan: Abram Spencer Jr., 86, who has been a season ticket holder for the last 50 years.

Over that span, Abram has been to “practically every game,” both at RFK Stadium and FedExField, only daring to miss a few in recent seasons under inclement weather.

He’s been there through four championship seasons with the Burgundy and Gold.  But he wears his Redskins gear just as proudly during a loss—like the 1940 NFL Championship, which the Redskins lost 73-0.

“That was a cold, cold day,” he said, still shaking his head 72 years later.  “It was cold.  It was cold.  That game was—Lord have mercy—that was terrible.”

Raised in downtown D.C. near Griffith Stadium, Abram was a casual Redskins fan growing up, going to the occasional game when he could.

“I remember my first game was some time during World War II,” he said.  “I was there when Andy Farkas ran a touchdown back from the end zone, with Dick Todd leading the way.  I guess I was around about seventeen, eighteen.  I’m not too sure.”

With a little historical research, we can guess which game that was.  Farkas scored on the opening kickoff of a Nov. 15, 1942 game against the New York Giants.  The play—which led to Farkas’s only kickoff return touchdown in the NFL—led to a 14-7 Redskins home victory.

And sure enough, Abram would have been 16 at the time.

It took another 20 years after Abram’s first game before he finally embraced the Redskins whole-heartedly: the day the Redskins traded for future Hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell.  Prior to that, the Redskins had never had an African-American player, alienating a large portion of the fan base.    Read more »

By Mike Richman
The Redskins Historian

Can two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan lead the Redskins to the playoffs in his third season in D.C.?

Will the talent-laden RG3 live up to his promise as the Redskins’ QB of the future?

Those questions will dominate the discussion during a taping of my TV show, “Burgundy & Gold Magazine,” at Branded `72 Pit Barbecue on East Gude Drive in Rockville on Monday, Aug. 27.

My special guests will be the always-charismatic Dexter Manley, the Redskins’ all-time sack leader, and ESPN 980’s Scott Jackson, host of “Inside the Locker Room.”

Someone Get A Grip On That Handlebar

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 15, 2012 – 5:10 pm

When Neil Rackers was kicking for the Arizona Cardinals, he said he was voted “Best Person to Commit A Crime” because his appearance could change from week to week.

So it’s really no surprise that Rackers — now with the Redskins — showed up to the team’s Ashburn, Va., facility in recent days sporting a new handlebar mustache.

“It’s training camp,” Rackers said Wednesday in the locker room. “You’ve gotta have fun. It is what it is — there were too many greys in the middle, so I took them off and left the handlebar.”

Griffin III, Fletcher Enjoying Chess Matches

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 15, 2012 – 4:26 pm

They’re locker buddies in the Washington Redskins locker room, but on the practice field, veteran linebacker London Fletcher and rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III are all business when lined up against each other.

In fact, oftentimes when Griffin III gets to the line of scrimmage and sees something in the defense that he doesn’t like, he’ll shout out an audible to change things up for the offense. Fletcher, a crafty veteran entering his 15th NFL season, will respond by barking out something to his defense to throw Griffin III off.

It’s this self-described “chess match” that keeps things interesting, Fletcher said Wednesday after practice at Redskins Park.

In Memoriam: Armstrong’s Yellow Jersey

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 15, 2012 – 10:44 am

One of the things I looked forward to the most when heading out for the Redskins’ afternoon training camp practices in recent days was discovering what Anthony Armstrong had put on his yellow “no-contact” jersey.

Well, Tuesday’s practice signified the end of training camp, so that pipe dream is over. But it doesn’t mean we can’t look back at the wide receiver’s antics with a glorious photo gallery.

Armstrong talked about the reason why he chose to alter his football fashion after Tuesday’s practice.

“It’s a way to break the monotony,” he said. “You get into late into training camp, it’s like groundhog day. And you don’t really know what day of the week it is. I’m just in there trying to be a little light and entertainment, for the guys that come out there. They’re going to dawn me with this yellow jersey, I might as well have a little fun with it and make a few guys laugh while I’m out here.”

Now, the reason Armstrong was wearing the yellow jersey — which is typically worn by the Redskins’ quarterbacks at practice — was not good. He injured his shoulder in practice last week and, while he recovered, was ordered to wear the non-contact jersey to avoid further damage.

Redskins Same, Bills Higher In Rankings

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 15, 2012 – 9:30 am

Tuck this one in under the “It doesn’t really matter at this point, but let’s talk about it anyway” category.

Despite defeating the Buffalo Bills in their 2012 preseason opening game, the Washington Redskins made up no ground in this week’s NFL.com Power Rankings.

The Redskins come in this week at No. 25.

Fans Give Thoughts About Moving Camp

Posted by Andrew Walker on August 15, 2012 – 8:59 am

Tuesday’s training camp practice at Redskins Park was the last one that will be open to the public for the 2012 season.

It was also the last official day of training camp that will be held at the Ashburn, Va., facility for at least the next few years.

The team announced in June that it will be relocating its training camp to Richmond, Va., which is about a 2-hour, 15-minute drive south along Interstate 95 from their Ashburn facility.
