With 165 tackles, 28 sacks, five forced fumbles and two Pro Bowl selections in his first three seasons in Washington, the 2009 first-round selection has certainly paid off for Coach Mike Shanahan and crew.
But despite all the hard hitting and intensity on the field, there’s some people at home keeping things in perspective for Orakpo off the field.
Orakpo recently sat down after practice with CSN Washington’s Chick Hernandez and talked about what his wife and his 2-year-old son, Brian Jr., have meant to him.
“I’ve got a beautiful son at home, beautiful wife,” Orakpo told Hernandez. “I’m gettin’ paid for what I love to do, and I’m just enjoying this ride just being a part of this Redskins organization with my family along with the ride with me, and it’s been great so far.”
Orakpo said after a hard day at the office, it’s nice to be able to come home and see mini-me.
“It just changes the whole mindset,” Orakpo said. “Because then it just reminds myself that it’s just a game. It’s a game that I love to do. …It’s a demanding sport, but at the same time, once you go home and see your son smile, it just puts life in perspective. So I just run with that and just have a good time with it.”
Excuse me, readers. I think I have something in my eye…
Here’s a video of the full CSN interview with Orakpo, who also discusses how he talks with rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III about their commercial opportunities:
