Inside The Park: Athletic Background

Note: Each day during the team’s training camp, Washington Redskins’ outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan will blog his insights about the team and his own life as he begins his second season in the NFL. To ask Ryan a question for the blog, you can leave a comment below, tweet your question to the Redskins’ account (@Redskins) with the hashtag #KerriganBlog, or leave a comment on the Redskins’ Facebook or Google+ pages.

I’ve decided to switch things up a little bit today and talk about my past athletic endeavors and what they have meant to me.

Most of you guys probably wouldn’t expect this given my size, but I used to be a swimmer for most of childhood. From the time I was 7 years old until I was 14 I swam competitively.

Having been a swimmer growing up and having three siblings who all swam throughout high school – and even my brother into college – I really enjoy watching competitive swimming. I especially enjoy the Olympic races. It was pretty sweet to see Phelps get his 19th career medal yesterday. That’s insane. That is dominance at its finest.

I swam through eighth grade, but then going into high school I had to choose between playing basketball or swimming.  While I was probably better at swimming than I was at hoops, I opted for basketball.

I played basketball for two seasons in high school, my freshman and junior years (I gave up basketball my sophomore year, then grew 3-4 inches and played again my junior year). While I wasn’t the most skilled player, I loved basketball, especially at my school, Muncie Central High School, where we have had one of the best basketball programs in Indiana high school history.

I liken my game to that of a less productive Ben Wallace; I could dunk, block shots and rebound, but other than that I was a bit of a liability on the court. My junior season, we made it to the state finals but lost to a STACKED Lawrence North team. This team included Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., the No. 1 and 4 overall picks in the 2007 NBA Draft, respectively.

Not only that, but their first seven guys went to Division 1 programs. First 7! It was like “Space Jam” and we were playing against the Monstars. It was a great ride, though.

Lastly, I was an avid baseball player growing up. I played all throughout high school and until I started getting football scholarship offers had potentially wanted to play baseball collegiately. I was an outfielder throughout high school and loved playing out there. Most of my best friends played baseball, which made it even more fun.

In the picture above you can see me swiping second base. I was definitely not your prototypical high school leadoff hitter!

I still love baseball and upon moving to the DMV have switched my allegiance to the Nationals. Go Nats!

Here’s today’s questions:

From ‘Alberto Molina’ on the Redskins Facebook:
White or gold pants?

It depends on which jersey we are wearing. If we are wearing the burgundy jerseys, then I prefer the white pants, but if we are wearing white jerseys, then I like the gold pants. I think it would be sweet to wear white on white.

From ‘NASCAR Will’ on the Redskins Blog:
“As an IU grad who graduated the same year as you did from Purdue I once hated you. But, as soon as I saw the Skins draft you, I was so excited. With that out of the way, my question to you is: With all the scrutiny around about making “legal” hits and hard hits, how do you adjust your play style as aggressive as it has been over the years to one that matches what the NFL deems fitting?”

Well first off, Boiler up! Second, the NFL does a good job of educating us on what hits are legal and which hits are illegal. After that it’s kind of a feel thing; you simply have to know when to pull off and not hit somebody, especially the QBs. You can still be aggressive defensively, you just have to be smart when it comes to the borderline calls.

That’s all I got today, folks. I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.

HTTR!

Thanks for responding to my comment a couple days ago. Your a stud!!!
I’m going to be at camp on Saturday, I’ll probably have a sign or something, please look for me!!!!
But my next question, who desides what uniforms you guys wear on game day? Do they even tell you or do you just wear what ever is in your locker?
I also have always wondered, do you guys use the same jerseys all season? or get brand new jerseys every game? How many jerseys do you guys have?
Thanks! HTTR!!!! Can’t wait to see Kerrakpo do workkkk this season!!

    Ryan,

I was just wondering what the weight room facilities are like at training camp? And your thoughts on how a good/up-to-date weight room could benefit a football team?

    Good Luck this season!

    Thank you,
    Matt
