Inside The Park: Why A Visor?

Posted by Ryan Kerrigan on July 30, 2012 – 11:23 pm

Note: Each day during the team’s training camp, Washington Redskins’ outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan will blog his insights about the team and his own life as he begins his second season in the NFL. To ask Ryan a question for the blog, you can leave a comment below, tweet your question to the Redskins’ account (@Redskins) with the hashtag #KerriganBlog, or leave a comment on the Redskins’ Facebook or Google+ pages.

Man, it’s amazing what a day off can do for you. It was another solid day of work for us and I think it can be attributed in large part to everyone feeling fresher after the day off. I know I personally I felt a lot better out there today, physically. But anyways, I’m liking the strides we’re making each day.

I feel like for the most part, we’re all getting into good football shape and getting used to wearing the pads again. It takes a little bit of time to get used to wearing the helmet again after a long offseason without a helmet.

For me personally, I’m trying to get used to playing with a visor on my helmet. I started wearing a visor during OTA’s because I got poked in the eye one day during practice and have continued wearing it ever since. I’m kinda liking it.

Wearing a visor is a bit of an adjustment because it can get water, sweat, spit, etc. on it, making it a bit harder to see. But the liquid element doesn’t put any kind of restriction on your vision which is nice. I always thought the visor was a pretty cool look on football helmets, so I think I’ll keep it for now.

On a side note, it was pretty cool seeing Wale at practice today. It’s not everyday you get to see a hip-hop star up close. Didn’t get a chance to meet him but having him there at practice was good enough for me. Thanks to Wale, as well as all of the fans that came out and supported us today.

Here’s today’s questions:

From ‘Die Hard Redskins Fan’ on the Redskins Blog:
Does Ryan and/or all the players dread signing autographs and talking with a fan or two? See you all at camp!”

I don’t mind taking pictures/signing autographs at all. Some athletes are different and do not like it but I think that most don’t mind and are usually accommodating. I know for me personally, if I am recognized in public and people want to take a picture or get an autograph, I get a little embarrassed because of the attention. So if you ever ask to take a pic/for an autograph and I act kinda awkward or shy, don’t take it as I’m being a jerk; just know that I get a little embarrassed in those types of situations.

From ‘Chris Hill’ on the Redskins Facebook:
“Growing up…who was your favorite team?”

I was a bit of a bandwagon fan growing up. It seemed like whatever team was good that year, I would end up having that team’s jersey at Christmas time. But as I got older, I became more of a Colts fan. Growing up an hour away from Indianapolis with a grandfather who has had season tickets since the Colts came to Indy, it was hard not to be a fan. I’ve been to several games throughout the years.

Well that’s all, folks! Stay tuned tomorrow for more of my thoughts on camp.

    Protect the vision man.

My question to you is what does a guy have to do to get his Kerrigan jersey signed by you? I damn near begged you… I know it was hot and I know you signed plenty of autographs but you looked right at me and smiled cause you knew i was a lunatic (screaming and waving my jersey at you)… hahaha I had a great time Sat but getting my jersey signed by you would have been icing on the cake for sure. Give me some pointers for next time. (Food I could bribe you with, hot model beside me?) hahhaa

I like the visor look on the helmets too. Would you get a new visor for each game? And have you ever tried a polarized tint or half-tint? I feel like my polarized sunglasses actually improve my vision, but I’m not sure about the effect on depth perception.

After reading just the first paragraph I had to stop. The lack of writing skill here is unparalleled.

I know that with the acquisition of RG3 there has been quite a bit of hype, is this extra attention positive or negative in the every day operation? Is everyone under more pressure to produce because if the hype?

It looks like the injury bug has hit early. Especially on the offensive line. Do they look better this year than last year in practice? Will they be able to create problems for defenses this year. That will be critical for the success of RG3.

Came to camp on Monday. Had a great time. Was there all day. My son was there, my grandson, we had a great time. I’ve been a fan since Sonny was the QB. Tried SOOO hard to get a few autographs.I just want to say a huge props to Evan Royster.and Neil Rackers!!!Made my kids day by signing. It looked as if we were going to head out with no autographs whatsoever. Even Kyle and Mike Shanahan were right there and I know they heard us but wouldn’t budge. Anyway. Maybe I was just in the wrong spot. You ALL looked great out there and I got some great pictures. Please tell both Evan Royster and Neil Rackers thanks again soooo very much for being so gracious with their time. Tear em up and have a great season.HTTR!!!

As an IU grad who graduated the same year as you did from Purdue I once hated you. But, as soon as I saw the Skins draft you, I was so excited. With that out of the way, my question to you is: With all the scrutiny going around about making “legal” hits and hard hits, how do you adjust your play style as aggressive as it has been over the years to one that matches what the NFL deems fitting?

What is the goal on combined sacks for you and Orakpo? How many more do you get than him? LOL

    Dear Mr. Kerrigan,
I was at fan appreciation day in 2004 and they had set up lines with groups of players in them and you had to wait close to an hour to get photo ops and autographs. You chose what line you wanted to wait in and I chose to wait in Patrick Ramseys line. Will they be doing the same for this years fan appreciation day? If so I would wait FOREVER in your line. Sorry if that was weird man…but you are my ALL-TIME favorite player, not just the way you play but your personality and overall nice-guy, humble attitude is the reason. Im 22 years old so I havent witnessed old school skin greats play and also I havent witnessed any of the glory days but without a doubt I am a crazy skin fan, been obsessed since I was five. Jason Campbell was my favorite until you came along! YOU DA MAN and stay humble buddy!

went to Colts training camp to see Luck. I was glad they did not pick RGIII. Luck will be good but I think RGIII will suite the skins better. Hope to get to Redskins camp Saturday. HTTR.
