He’s had a busy offseason with award show appearances, television commercials — oh, and trying to master his team’s offensive playbook.
And through it all, Washington Redskins’ rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has remained level-headed and focused on the main objective at hand: getting his team back to the playoffs.
Griffin III was grilled by reporters late Wednesday afternoon about his busy offseason outside of football — his celebrity status and his life away from the field — in the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner’s first press conference of the Redskins’ 2012 training camp, which began Wednesday with some conditioning and meetings at Redskins Park.
Though Griffin III, the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, just recently signed his rookie contract and has assuredly been making some nice cheddar via advertisements with companies like adidas, Subway and Gatorade, he said he doesn’t like spending money and was taken aback by the prices of houses in the Washington, D.C., area.
“I don’t spend money that much,” Griffin III said. “The prices on some of the places were ridiculous, but we handled that. It’s nice out here. It’s like a jungle. [There are] a lot of bugs, a lot of trees,… but it’s definitely fun. I’m a chill guy, so I usually don’t do too much, but there’s definitely stuff to do, whether you’re here in Virginia or in D.C.”
Griffin III said when he’s had a free block of time — which probably hasn’t been often — he’s tried to enjoy a movie or get out to the various D.C. landmarks.
But it isn’t exactly easy to get around when you’re looked at by many success-starved fans as the savior of their beloved football franchise.
“Wherever I go it’s a pretty crazy scene,” Griffin III said. “I’ve gone to movies. I went on a bus tour in D.C. I went to the U.S. National Team games up there. That was fun, but other than that, I haven’t really done too much. I try to stay out of the city, make sure I stay focused and stay grounded, rather than always being out, always being the focal point of everything.”
Griffin III said he doesn’t mind the crazy scenes when he’s out and about.
But the Texas native would rather just spend his afternoons with his feet up and a refreshing drink in hand.
“Sometimes you just need to sit back, sit on the couch and drink some Kool-Aid or something,” he said with a laugh.
