Blog: ‘Inside The Park With Ryan Kerrigan’

Posted by Brian Tinsman on July 24, 2012 – 12:52 pm

Over the last year, there have been a number of new voices introduced to the Official Redskins Blog, including two full-time bloggers and a number of stray interns.  Each writer seeks to bring you Redskins insight from an insider’s perspective–in the best way that a non-player or coach can.

As it turns out, people in the Redskins organization read the Blog as well, including those that suit up and sack quarterbacks on Sunday.  Yesterday afternoon, Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan tweeted @Redskins to ask why we don’t have a training camp player diary on Redskins.com:

So as of this morning, Ryan Kerrigan is the newest guest voice on the Official Redskins Blog:

When Ryan reports to Redskins Park with the other veterans tomorrow, he will be 100 percent focused on preparing for the upcoming season.  But when he’s not beating up pop-up dummies on the back field or playing Captain America in the weight room, Kerrigan will give us a few minutes of his time for a player’s perspective on training camp.

His only stipulation for writing a daily blog is that it be fan-centric, focused on fan interaction.  For each entry that he posts, Kerrigan will be kept up-to-date with any comments or questions from fans.

If you have something that you always wanted to know about training camp, or something specifically for Ryan, this is YOUR golden opportunity to ask.  Either comment at the bottom of the post (starting with this one), tweet the team (@Redskins) or him (@RyanKerrigan91), or post a question on the Redskins Facebook Page.  Then, check back everyday to see if your question got answered.

The goal is to offer unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, with a look into the player training camp experience in Ryan’s own words.  He just needs your help to get started.

Redskins Nation, what do you want to know?

Ryan, what are your expectations for your second year in the league? I just wanted to say that you truly had a tremendous year. Also, I’ve seen the video posted by HogsHaven.com on Brian Orakpo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpdSDvfl_Yg&feature=player_embedded). They show his struggles with being held and clearly show that he only really has a bullrush move. Is this something that you two work on together, techniques and training? I’ve often wondered if it would be better if you two swapped sides. Your brute strength and pursuit could push past an LT, while his pure speed and athleticism could break the ankles of an RT to get to the quarterback.

Planning to bring my sons to training camp but would like to know if it’s better to bring then to Fan Appreciation Day or on a regular day for them to get the most out of what training camp is all about? Can not wait for a great year out of all of you! Hugh fans here in NC!

Hey Ryan I think it’s great that you are doing this!

You are part of an outside linebacker tandem with Brian Orakpo which is clearly young and very talented and can do some scary things with the rest of the front 7 for years to come in my opinion.
My question is what’s the relationship with you and Orakpo like? Then also I would like to know do you both compete against each other? Not as if to say im better than you but for the good of the team.

For example do you make bets for money/ you buy dinner/ bragging rights (in jest) etc on how many sacks/forced fumbles etc you get just to add that extra incentive and push each other that bit more on getting things done for the team?

Ryan, What do YOU see as the major difference between those who have a “motor” to push to excel regards of the record or game and those who simply go through the motions when it appears to be over. I think YOU demonstrated a guy with a motor that runs continuously and I will hold that in high regard over a big name anytime. Thanks for your perspective

I think this is great for you to do! Where are you looking to improve over last year (which was exceptional)? How about an assessment of the progress of the D, say on a weekly basis during training camp and the preseason games?

hey ryan you are a great player, leader and foundation on the D line. I want to say thanks for your hard work and ethics, every game its noticed. Thank you

    Hey Ryan.
I’m from Australia and been a Redskins fan since the early 70’s. This is a great thing to do for the fans, so congrats to the Redskins hierarchy and yourself for taking this on.

Tell me, what does Ryan Kerrigan do to get and stay fit during training camp?

Ryan, when you start training camp on Thursday, will there be two practices a day immediately, or do two-a-days come later? Keep up the great work, we’re all proud of you and root for you.

HTTR!!! I think this is awesome Ryan and the Redskins decided to do this. I’m not sure how you plan to do this but it would be awesome if you could do like a mini (hardknocks) but just on Kerrigan and the defense. For example, shoot what he does before practice, a little bit during, post practice, lunch time (so we could see if its with the team or if they go out) then the second practice, and maybe a little bit of study time of film. This would be amazing!
Best of luck to all! and Thank you for providing us with this experience!

Does Ryan and/or all the players dread signing autographs and talking with a fan or two?
    See you all at camp!

Is there anything you can do to convince those embarrassing A-holes to finally put that stupid “Hogette” thing to rest? Can we take a vote from the fans or something? Circulate a petition? It was dumb when they started it and it’s still dumb. I think they just like wearing womens’ clothing and probably get off doing it in public and getting away with it. Are they Penn State grads or something?

After that we can work on getting rid of that annoying “Like us on facebook” thing that sticks out every time you try to read an article on redskins.com.

Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated… by millions.

What gives you the most optimism and the most concern as you head into training camp this year. Keep up the great work!

Whatching the first game of the year against the Giants, I got so friggin hype when you batted that ball, and then ran it in! My whole house was just goin crazy! It really was cool to me because I watched you before the draft, an thought how you would be a great addition to the Skins D! Had no clue they would pick you, and when they did I was feeling like the team was really starting to do some good things on that side of the ball. My question to you is. How did that feel, when you crossed that goal line In your first game, against the Giants ? I cant imagine how great that had to feel man! Anyway good luck this year stay healthy, an lets get at them QBs! HTTR!!!

Ryan, this is a great thing for you and the redskins to do for the fans. We all really appreciate the interaction and behind the scene info. My question is basic and i know you probbaly have heard a thousand times before whats your thoughts on RGIII from what you have seen in practice. Do you think he will be able to turn the offense around like you turned the defense around last year? I know i said this when i met you the other day at TCW but i wanted to say again that you are truly a great player and we are lucky to have you here in washington. HTTR!!

Is there one game that the team had already circled this season? And is there one team on the schedule, that if you all beat, you’ll know at that point that the redskins have made progress?

What advice can you give me for my 16 year old nephew. He plays LB for his school and has real potential but he’s caught up in the idea of wanting a job, I’m guessing it’s so he can buy the things his friends have. Do you think this is a good idea, or should he just focus on school and football?
