‘Five Things’ With GM Bruce Allen

Posted by Andrew Walker on July 11, 2012 – 10:55 am

Note: Washington Redskins’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Bruce Allen filled in this week for Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King and his “Monday Morning Quarterback” column. The Redskins Blog will be highlighting some of Allen’s comments from the column, which you can read in its entirety by clicking here.

There’s lots to like about Washington Redskins’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Bruce Allen, so it probably comes as no surprise that he thinks much like the typical Redskins fanatic.

He likes a cold beer every once in a while. He likes to hear “Hail to the Redskins.” He doesn’t like to beat around the bush. And he loves to win.

Allen this week wrote about some of the specifics that he likes — and doesn’t like — in his Sports Illustrated column.

Here’s “Five Things” with Allen:

Five Things I Like
1. I like hearing the Redskins’ marching band play “Hail to the Redskins.”
2. I like the Rookie Symposium being held in Ohio, where a trip to Canton is possible.
3. I like the patriotic attitude of NFL fans.
4. I like having beer(s) with our Alumni.
5. I like my memories and friends from the USFL.

Five Things I Don’t Like
1. I don’t like $36 million of our salary cap room going to our competitors.
2. I don’t like political correctness in a locker room.
3. I don’t like “anonymous sources.”
4. I don’t like injuries.
5. I don’t like pessimists.

Five Things I Look Forward To
1. I look forward to winning an away game.
2. I look forward to winning a home game.
3. I look forward to tailgating at FedEx Field.
4. I look forward to Thanksgiving in Dallas (as long as Jerry Jones doesn’t make Clint Longley the honorary captain).
5. I look forward to the NFL returning to Los Angeles

Five Favorite Washington-Area Monuments/Museums
1. The Capitol
2. The National Museum of the Marine Corps
3. The Smithsonian Institution
4. Mount Vernon
5. The National WWII Memorial

Here’s my take: I like that Allen remains close with the Redskins’ alumni. I’ve seen him interact with many of these guys in the back of the Redskins’ 80th Anniversary Thank You Tour Bus, and it’s clear that he cares about how the former ‘Skins are doing. But that makes sense, considering Allen grew up with some of these guys as the son of former coach George Allen.

I also like that Allen doesn’t like political correctness in a locker room. If a coach or teammate has something to say, then say it — and say it to the media, too. But just utilize some tact and professionalism in doing so.

I like that Allen, first and foremost, likes winning away games. Home game wins are great, too, but the home field advantage often makes the wins expected. When a team can go on the road and steal a win from a great team in front of their home fans — I’m sure there’s not many feelings better for a general manager.

Check back tomorrow for more from Allen’s Sports Illustrated column.
