But Redskins’ rookie guard Adam Gettis explained Monday how overzealous fans can sometimes get it wrong in their autograph hunts.
Gettis was interviewed by Hogs Haven’s Kevin Ewoldt, who asked if he had any dirt on Redskins’ rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III that fans don’t know.
“I got a story,” Gettis told Ewoldt via phone interview. “Me, him, and (rookie safety Jordan) Bernstine were at the airport. When we first got here for the rookie camp. Three or four people came up to us, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God! It’s RGIII!! It’s RGIII!!’…and then they all look at us and are like, ‘Which one of you guys are RGIII?’ Me, Jordan, and RG were like, ‘We’re all RGIII, so you might as well just get all our autographs.'”
Though the encounter was probably embarrassing for all involved, Gettis said it was also “pretty funny.”
Gettis — the Redskins’ fifth-round pick out of Iowa in April’s NFL Draft — also talked about a variety of other football-related topics, such as what he sees as his strengths and weaknesses heading into training camp:
“My quickness and getting off the ball because you run back and forth here,” Gettis said. “My strengths are good for the NFL, which I’m finding out. Some of the weakness would be technique things. Different techniques than Iowa. We ran the same system but things are a little different.”
Gettis said he’s learned how important good technique is in the professional game.
“I believe technique can overcome anything,” he said. “I’m a small (player), but I’ve been able to make it this far, and I believe it’s through technique. It’s more though the whole three to four seconds of the block. First second you have to get after somebody and he may shed off the block that first second, but you may be off some body for two to three to four seconds and they shed the block and make the tackle … so you gotta be technique style throughout the block.”
Gettis will be among several offensive linemen trying to earn a roster spot at training camp, which begins July 25 at Redskins Park.
