Bruce Allen On His First “Cuss” Word

Posted by Andrew Walker on July 9, 2012 – 10:38 am

Note: Washington Redskins’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Bruce Allen filled in this week for Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King and his “Monday Morning Quarterback” column. The Redskins Blog will be highlighting some of Allen’s comments from the column, which you can read in its entirety by clicking here.

Growing up the son of a Hall of Fame NFL head coach, Bruce Allen certainly had several special opportunities to learn from some of the best football minds the game has ever seen.

Allen’s childhood was filled with stories of time spent with his father, George Allen, and the innovators that helped shape the younger Allen into one of the most respected football minds in the game today.

One of those innovators was the one and only George Halas — one of the most succesful and creative coaches in NFL history. Allen on Monday recalled when Halas taught him his first “cuss word” in his guest column for Sports Illustrated:

“In 1964 I was sitting in the back seat of his car on the way to Bears training camp at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana while he and my father were discussing personnel and objectives for the team. I caught him staring at me in the rear view mirror, noticing how intently I was trying to follow the conversation. He turned to me at one point and said: “That’s great you want to learn about the team, I think it’s time you learn your first cuss word.”

After a slight pause, Halas looked at my father for approval (not that he needed it). He continued: “You can only use this word on a really bad person, someone you really hate or who did something very very bad.” He then made me acknowledge that I understood, to which I responded: “Yes, Coach!” After what seemed like the longest minute ever, he turned around and said one word with an intensity that I had never seen: “PACKER.” And then he added: “Don’t tell your mom I told you!”

I’d imagine Bruce Allen has learned a few more cuss words over the years, none of which would probably be considered as offensive as the word “COWBOY.”

Check back with the blog tomorrow for Allen’s take on everything from his motivations to his thoughts about names on the back of jerseys.
