It was one of those surreal moments that saw the Washington Redskins’ historic past meet its exciting future.
Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III — on a tour Wednesday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the rest of the Redskins’ rookies as part of the Rookie Symposium — was face-to-face with the figure of Sammy Baugh, the Redskins’ quarterback drafted in 1937 that led the team to two NFL championships.
The encounter was captured beautifully in this piece by NFL.com and NFL Network reporter Jeff Darlington.
Both Griffin III and Baugh have much in common. They’re both Texans and both were drafted as youngsters by a Redskins team looking to take the next step.
Baugh parlayed that challenge into a Hall of Fame career. Even after all that time, the Texas Christian University product still ranks third all-time in Redskins passing yards with 21,886, is first in TD passes with 187 and first in single season quarterback rating at 109.7.
Griffin III, meanwhile, a Baylor product, is hoping to end up with similar career results — including having a bust in Canton.
“Everybody says (with) the success ladder, you have to make sure you’re not reaching too high on your success ladder,” Griffin III told Darlington after his tour of the Hall of Fame. “But I think everybody’s goal should be to get to the Hall of Fame, because if that is truly your goal, you’ll work to get there. All the guys that have given us testimony have told us how hard you have to work to get to that point, so if you’re willing to say, ‘Hey, that’s my goal. I want to be a Hall-Of-Fame player,” then you’re going to go through every day and make sure you seize the most out of that day.”
Griffin III said it’s important for today’s players to be knowledgable of the history of the National Football League.
“It’s just all the cliche — you don’t know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve been,” the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner told Darlington. “Although none of us have been in the NFL since the ’50s and ’60s, to know what those guys did back then and had to go through to get to where we are now is extremely important for us to grasp so we can kind of know what our identity is.”
