10 For 80: Barry Wilburn

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 28, 2012 – 4:00 pm

Note: The Redskins Blog will be profiling several former players, coaches and team officials eligible to be voted by you, the fans, in this year’s Redskins 80th Anniversary celebration. To vote for Barry Wilburn or your 10 other all-timers to join the already-chosen list of the 70 Greatest Redskins, go to http://www.redskins80th.com/

It’s no wonder former Redskins’ cornerback Barry Wilburn was destined to become an All-Pro, Super Bowl-winning performer.

His mother ran on the same relay team in the Olympics with the legendary Wilma Rudolph.

Wilburn’s father, meanwhile, worked for Josten’s, the company that typically designs Super Bowl rings for the NFL’s champions.

Wilburn — who was selected in the eighth round (219th overall) in the 1985 NFL Draft — turned out to be a steal for the Redskins.

The product of Memphis, Tenn., Wilburn — who played collegiately at Ole Miss — was voted first-team All-Pro in the Redskins’ 1987 Super Bowl championship campaign. That season, Wilburn had a league-leading nine interceptions.

That same year, against Minnesota, Wilburn stepped in front of a Wade wilson pass on the goal line and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, setting a Redskins’ record.

But Wilburn saved his best for the postseason in 1987.

In the Redskins’ Divisional Round matchup against the Chicago Bears at Solider Field, Wilburn picked off a Jim McMahon pass. But he wasn’t finished.

In the Super Bowl three weeks later at Jack Murphy Stadium, Wilburn picked off two John Elway passes to help seal the Redskins’ 42-10 blowout victory over the Broncos.

Wilburn played five seasons with the Redskins, where he snagged 19 interceptions. He also played one season for Cleveland and two seasons for Philadelphia.
