Washington Redskins rookie quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins learned Wednesday morning that they had been nominated for awards at the 20th annual ESPY Awards show, hosted by ESPN.
Griffin III is nominated for two awards, while Cousins is nominated for one.
Griffin III — the second overall selection of the Redskins in April’s NFL Draft — has been nominated for ESPYs in the “Best Breakthrough Athlete” and “Best Male College Athlete” categories.
In 2011, Griffin III became the first Heisman Trophy Award winner in Baylor University history. The junior threw for 4,293 yards with 37 touchdows to just six interceptions and added 699 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Cousins, meanwhile, is nominated alongside former Michigan State teammate Keith Nichol for the “Best Play” category.
Nichol was on the receiving end of Cousins’ 44-yard, game-winning, deflected Hail Mary pass that gave the Spartans a 37-31 win over Wisconsin last October.
Cousins — the Redskins’ fourth-round selection in April’s NFL Draft — finished his career as Michigan State’s all-time leader in wins, touchdowns, quarterback rating, pass completions and total yards.
Redskins fans can help Griffin III and Cousins win their respective awards by voting online or by their mobile device at www.espn.com/ESPYS. The show will be broadcast live Wednesday, July 11, from the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
