Washington Redskins executive vice president and head coach Mike Shanahan will join former Redskins quarterbacks Joe Theismann and Mark Rypien in next month’s American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe.
Shanahan, Theismann and Rypien will join a star-studded field July 20-22 that includes Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Jerry Rice and tournament favorite, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, according to a media release.
Both Shanahan and Theismann have considerable experience in the tournament, which raises money and awareness for LIVESTRONG, its official charity. The two have combined to play in the tournament for 36 years.
Theismann, who is in his 20th tournament, is listed at 30/1 odds to capture the title. His best finish was in 2001, when he placed seventh. Shanahan, meanwhile, is listed at 100/1 odds to win and his best finish was when he tied for 45th in 2005.
We’ll see if Shanahan is as eager to start this golf tournament as he was last month, when Redskins’ outside linebacker Brian Orakpo felt his coach’s wrath before teeing off in the seventh annual Leukemia Golf Classic.
Rypien, meanwhile, is a former tournament champion and placed 10th last year. He’s listed at 15/1 odds to win, according to the release.
Romo is the favored player to win at 5/2 odds. Yuck.
