Video: Griffin III OK With ‘RGIII’ ‘Persona’

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 25, 2012 – 11:20 am

Deion Sanders was “Primetime,” William Perry was “The Fridge” and Jerome Bettis was “The Bus.”

But Redskins’ rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III is OK with his “on-the-field persona” simply being “RGIII.”

Griffin III recently stopped by the set of CSNWashington.com’s “Redskins Nation” for a conversation with host Larry Michael, and talked about, among other topics, the “RGIII” moniker.

Does he mind the nickname?

“I don’t dislike the nickname,” Griffin III told Michael. “Usually when I hear it, I associate it with fans. Most people who truly know me don’t call me RGIII, but it’s just an on-the-field persona. I’m Robert Griffin III off the field and RGIII on the field.”

Griffin — who said he’s been referred to as “Rook,” “RGIII,” “Roberton” and “Griff” by his teammates during organized team activities and mini-camp — told Michael to go with his gut feeling when doing the Redskins’ play-by-play during the season.

“You can call me RGIII if you want,” Griffin III said. “If the fans want you to call me RGIII, call me RGIII. Do what you gotta do, baby.”

By the way, for the sake of consistency, The Redskins Blog will always refer to Griffin III as just that — Griffin III.

Well, that’s unless someone else is quoted as calling him “RGIII,” which has already happened several times since his arrival.

Anyways, here’s part of Michael’s conversation with Griffin III on Redskins Nation:
