Darrell Green’s Son Gives NFL A Shot

For Redskins fans looking for added incentive to catch the Nov. 4 game against the Carolina Panthers, you might just be in luck.

That’s because an all-time great Redskins’ son could be suited up for the opposing team.

Jared Green, son of Redskins’ Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green, is an undrafted college free agent out of Southern University attempting to make the Panthers’ roster as a wide receiver.

According to this story from the Associated Press, the younger Green is taller (6-foot-1) than his old man (5-foot-9), but the duo have one thing in common: Speed.

Darrell Green — one of the fastest players in football during his illustrious 20-year career with the Redskins — was clocked at 4.29 seconds in the 40-yard dash coming out of Texas A&M Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I). Jared Green, meanwhile, runs a 4.33-second 40-yard dash.

“I feel like my speed is something that gets me in the door,” Jared Green said. “Now I just have to make plays.”

Darrell Green was at the Panthers’ mini-camp practice Thursday and said he knows that his son still has some work to do before landing a spot on the team’s roster.

“He should have been drafted, I truly believe that,” Darrell Green said. “But he’s taking the beltway around. And that’s OK. But he’s worked and worked and now he’s going to have to keep working.”

Jared Green, meanwhile, shared some of the same type of wisdom that made his father one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history.

“Everybody in this position has an opportunity to make that big play and to do that big thing — and that can be on or off the field,” Jared said. “When they give me that opportunity, right now is right now. Right now isn’t tomorrow or next week, it’s right now. Every time they call my number I have to make it happen.”

Should Jared Green make the Panthers’ roster, I wonder how conflicted his father will feel Nov. 4, when the Panthers come to FedExField to take on his beloved Redskins?

That’s something we’ll definitely keep an eye on, though we certainly wish the Greens the best.

I remember watching at Canton, Ohio when Jared introduced his father for Darrell’s HOF induction ceremony. Would be awesome to see Jared make the team. Maybe, after putting in the work, he might be a starter someday. I would absolutely make a trade for him on Madden 🙂
