‘Distinguished’ Chester Ready For 2012

Posted by Andrew Walker on June 5, 2012 – 9:39 am

With a full year of experience with the Washington Redskins behind him, veteran offensive lineman Chris Chester is primed for a strong 2012 season.

The only Redskins’ offensive lineman to start all 16 games at the same position last season, Chester settled in at right guard and quickly learned coach Mike Shanahan’s zone-blocking scheme.

Chester – who played collegiately at Oklahoma before spending five years with the Baltimore Ravens – was also key to the successful rookie seasons of running backs Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster, who combined to rush for 968 yards in 2011, oftentimes by running through Chester’s blocks.

“I knew in this offense, there’s a lot of moving and a lot of movement from the O-line,” Chester said. “I have a good foundation in running and from conditioning coming from Oklahoma and Baltimore and from my time here, so I feel my conditioning is great.”

Chester – who has played every position along the offensive line in his six-year NFL career – said he’s looking forward to more growth in the Redskins’ zone-blocking focus.

“It probably suits me a lot better in the long run, just because you really get to utilize athleticism and try to get guys going and get running,” he said.

Chester recently joined the set on Redskins Nation with host Larry Michael, and the two chatted it up about a variety of topics, including comic books and how they translate into movies.

Chester — who admitted to being a huge comic book fan — said he enjoyed the recent release of “The Avengers,” though he said it didn’t quite completely stick to its original plot.

“I’d say about 70 percent accurate,” Chester told Michael.”They covered most of the bases, and there’s some things they’ve got to do for the sake of movies. But, it was pretty accurate, I thought, for the most part.”

Chester was also asked about the touch of gray sneaking its way into his hair. Chester’s teammates, he said, are none the wiser.

“I think they think I’m old, so they let it slide,” the 29-year-old Chester said. “I’m OK with the gray — I think it’s a more distinguished look.”

Here’s the video of Chester’s interview with Redskins Nation:
