Brian Banks To Get Tryout With Redskins

Washington Redskins’ executive vice president and head coach Mike Shanahan on Thursday confirmed that the Redskins have offered Brian Banks — a former standout high school linebacker wrongfully convicted of rape and kidnapping after a 2002 incident — a tryout.

Shanahan said he recently called Banks, 26, to offer him the tryout after hearing about the ordeal.

“I think when somebody goes through the situation that he went through, you know, he deserves an opportunity to try out for somebody,” Shanahan told reporters after Thursday’s round of organized team activities at Redskins Park. “Concerning what he went through — just reading about it, I don’t know him personally — I called him up and said, ‘Hey, we’d love to have you out.'”

Shanahan said Banks will try out for the Redskins next week to “see what type of shape he’s in and see if there’s a chance.”

Banks’ story has been well-publicized since it all went down in 2002, but ESPN columnist Rick Reilly put it all in perspective with this piece Wednesday:

“A judge in Long Beach, Calif., threw out his kidnapping and rape conviction last week after looking at a videotape of his accuser admitting she lied. After 10 years, he was suddenly a free and innocent man.

“My mouth hurts from smiling so much,” Banks told me Tuesday night. “Unbelievable.””

Banks was 16 and had already been offered a full-ride scholarship to USC to play linebacker for the Trojans when the alleged incident occurred at his California high school.

He served 62 months of a six-year prison sentence on charges of rape and kidnapping. After spending more than 1,800 days in the slammer, he had to register as a convicted sex felon and wear a GPS ankle bracelet 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But, as Reilly reported, “On Thursday, May 24, in a Long Beach courtroom, Banks got his future back” after his wrongful conviction of rape and kidnapping was overturned when his accuser recanted her story.

Banks has also reportedly been offered tryouts with the San Diego Chargers, the Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here’s the video of Shanahan’s press conference following today’s round of OTAs, via Redskins.com TV. Shanahan’s comments about Banks begin at the 9:17 mark:

I am so happy Shanahan steps up to the plate and gave this young man a shot at his dream if he wasnt wrongly accused he would of most likely already be in the NFL>>>I love the Redskins!!!! I hope Banks does well!!!!

I’m glade that everything turned out for the better for you. Its a shame how saten works and the people who allow things like this to happen. I know that time can not be givin back. Or the time your. God givin name wasruin. But the better outcome is way more worth of your name being cleared. I wish you luck and my prayers go out to you. Hopefully the world will be watching you play with my team the redskins.

I hope Brian is given more than just a basic fair chance. As he may not have had the opportunity to train like so many others, he, more than so, so many others deserves extra care, provisions and training to try out in his best shape. Nothing should be given without being earned. But there is plenty of reason to ‘pay it forward’ to this amazing young man! Go Brian!!!

Good luck Brian. You deserve a second chance to get your life back.

I’m glad that he is getting a shot. I think that this man deserves all the success in the world. Putting one innocent man away is worse that letting 500 guilty ones free.

I’m happy for the young man the fact that he got out and is given chances to change his future. I pray the best for him, but that young girl that knowledgably put him behind bars knowing that he was innocent, should have ransom to pay back as retribution because 12 years in jail, not to include all the opportunities taken away from him because of this accusation this young boy should have justice!! It is not justice for him to just be out but that heifer should be an ultimate example for those whom prescribe that medicine or tried too, to others youngster like him!!!

I’m impressed with the Redskins for allowing Banks to try out for the team. After all, given the circumstances, he probably would have been on someone’s team already. I wish him much luck and hopefully his dreams will come true. Maybe he’ll end up with us (the Redskins).

Brian the sun has now shined on you, and you have been cleared of all charges that were pressed against you.As a Ret. NYCPD officer it shows how the system work and the truth came out. Now out and put on the Burgandy and Gold and do what you were meant to do- Get a bunch of sacks and block the holes.
I’ll be there watching you, and I know you can make it.
    God Bless!

When I first heard Brian’s story I was devastated for him that he had to go thru what he did because of someone’s lies. I can only hope that he has been able to stay in the right physical condition to be able to live out his dreams. Long time Skins fans in this house and would love to see him playing for our team when we come down for a game this year.

His accuser should spend the exact number of days and hours in the pen.

Brian, Good luck and go for your dreams.

I’ve done time myself. I’m putting that out there because its truely impossible to know what being incarcerated is like unless you’ve been there yourself. It is really an over due blessing being asked to try out for any NFL team. You probably would be in your 4th year by now. You deserve any and all blessings that come your way. Just don’t take them for granted cause of what you’ve been through. A hell of alot of people are watching you now, just like a horse running a race. As long as you keep God in your life all will go well for you. Whiether it be in a Skins uniform or laboring at a constrution site. We;re all praying for you Man.”YOU CAN DO IT!!!” Peace

    Brian,

What has happened to you was terrible . I know that know one could know the pain that you are feeling for what u had to go through but God. Trust me God knows all. You are now being blessed and I pray that you take hold of his hands .
May God continue to Bless you.
PS Hold your head up High!

I think the better deal would be for USC to honor the scholarship offer it had made. He missed an opportunity to get an education and play college football. If he is not in football shape, go play college ball for 2 years. He may have a lot of age on him but his body will not have been battered like the average 28 yr NFL player.
