A steady, annoying drizzle was the weather theme at Redskins Park Monday morning, so head coach Mike Shanahan decided to bring the team’s first round of organized team activities inside.
It was the first time Shanahan has been afforded that luxury. The team’s brand new indoor training facility was just recently completed, and its purpose is ideal for days like Monday.
“Perfect timing, eh?” second-year outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said after Monday’s activities. “This is what we built it for, for days like this when the weather’s not cooperative.”
Veteran kicker Neil Rackers — brought in last month to compete for kicking duties with three-year Redskins’ starter Graham Gano — said he’s heard arguments against practicing in an indoor training facility.
But the No. 1 objective during practice, the 11-year NFL veteran said, is getting work done, and having an indoor facility lets an organization accomplish that goal.
“Some people could give you the argument that if it’s going to rain on gameday then you need to be outside, but the importance of the Redskins’ indoor training facility is if you’re trying to run routes and you’re trying to get timing down,” Rackers said. “And if it’s windy and rainy outside, you can’t always get the work done that you need to get done. It’s great to get looks, and to just get work done.”
Rookie running back Alfred Morris said he felt “pampered” Monday to be able to use the indoor training facility.
“I’m definitely not used to it,” Morris said. “I’m used to being outdoors in the south Florida heat. It gets mad hot down there.”
Morris — drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 draft out of Florida Atlantic University — said he didn’t have an indoor facility while playing in college.
“We had a turf field, but it was outdoors and we had some crazy practices,” Morris said. “It would be pouring out rain, and we’d still be out there on the turf field practicing.”
Count at least three Redskins who were happy to be dry while running through drills Monday.
“Thank goodness we have (the indoor training facility) now,” Kerrigan said.
The team is not participating in OTAs today, but the activities resume Wednesday at Redskins Park.
