Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III had the opportunity to talk about everything from his upbringing, academics, Heisman trophy, famous socks, his proposal — and even his beatboxing skills — Thursday night as a guest on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno.
Griffin III, who was Leno’s second guest of the night, joining actor Hugh Laurie, spoke with the talk-show host for more than eight minutes, and even had gifts for the two stars — a pair of socks.
The 2011 Heisman award winner came out on the stage as “The Tonight Show” band played “Hail to the Redskins,” and wooed the crowd with a story about how he proposed to his girlfriend after a football game at Baylor.
“(I) had a guy in there playing guitar, I sang her a song, had candles in the middle of the field with her family, my family, holding them,” Griffin III told Leno. “I had to do it the right way.”
When asked when the wedding was, Griffin said, “Sometime next year.”
“I’ve got to focus on that playbook,” the rookie quarterback told Leno.
Griffin III was even afforded the opportunity to showcase his beatboxing abilities. Personally, I couldn’t tell if it was him beatboxing or the drummer playing from “The Tonight Show.”
Griffin III Thursday night became the first active Redskin to appear on “The Tonight Show” in its current format. Four other former Redskins have also made appearances; quarterback Joe Theismann tops that list with three appearances, while Deion Sanders, coach Mike Shanahan and Jason Taylor have made one appearance apiece, according to “The Tonight Show” staffers.
