It was a common interest in faith that made Redskins’ running back Roy Helu Jr. and his fiancee, Danielle, know they were right for each other.
And the couple will soon be taking that faith straight to the altar.
The Redskins’ Brian Tinsman reported about Helu Jr.’s engagement April 17. At the time Helu Jr. talked about the rapid development of his relationship with Danielle and how he was even enjoying taking part in wedding planning.
Since that time, Helu Jr. — a former star running back at the University of Nebraska — and Danielle — a national championship-winning former volleyball player at Nebraska — have also been the focus of an April 30 feature piece in the Omaha World-Herald.
In that article, the couple talked about how they have built their relationship on their faith.
Here’s a snippet from the article:
“Last summer, after Dani returned to Nebraska, they began spending time together: dinners at Dani’s parents’ home, grabbing a bite at a restaurant, hitting a couple of movies. But mostly they just talked about their lives, their families and their faith.
Amanda Mancuso, Dani’s sister, said it wasn’t unusual to hear Dani praying over the phone with Roy while they were apart this past NFL season.
On Roy’s visits to the Mancuso home, Amanda would spot him and Dani at the kitchen table holding hands in prayer.
Dani says she grew up in a Christian home but committed her life more fully to Christ in early fall 2010, while recovering from shoulder surgery in Germany. She had never suffered a serious sports injury before, and she was lonely. She needed the Lord more than ever.
Roy says he began turning to Christ during his freshman year at NU. He says he missed his family in California and felt lonely and depressed. The team chaplain read Scripture to Roy, and the words clicked.
“My heart was ready,” he says.”
The rest of the piece is definitely worth a read.
Helu Jr. and Danielle’s wedding is coming up very soon, and the second-year Redskins’ running back has already indicated several teammates will be invited.
We certainly wish the couple the best of luck as they begin their lives together.
