Team, Effort, Tradition: New Nike Uniforms

Posted by Andrew Walker on May 10, 2012 – 6:19 pm

Team, effort and tradition. That’s the Washington Redskins way.

And what better way to parlay those three key components than to include them with the team’s newest uniforms?

That’s exactly what the team and Nike collaborated to do with the release of the team’s 80th Anniversary Uniforms.

The new uniforms — which are a “balance between history and tradition featuring a rich darker color palate and updated numbering system,” according to a Redskins press release — have the words “Team, Effort, Tradition” embroidered into their neckline.

“The Redskins are an amazing organization focused on team, unity and tradition,” Nike Football Creative Director Todd Van Horne said in the release. “We have truly enjoyed working with (Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder) and his team on this project and look forward to seeing the new Elite 51 uniform system on the field this season.”

Snyder said he hopes the 80th Anniversary Uniforms strike a chord with the organization’s devoted fans.

“In honor of 80 years of rich tradition this anniversary uniform displays our heritage” Snyder said.  “We hope that it will bring back great memories to our fans.”

The 80th Anniversary Uniforms will be worn at two Redskins games to be determined in the 2012 season.

Here’s a video of Redskins’ outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan unveiling the special 80th Anniversary Uniforms at Thursday’s kickoff celebration:

It nice seeing throwbacks…its a lot better than the red and yellow they wear on a regular basis, seriously do the marketing people not know what burgandy and gold actually looks like

Better then Steelers throwbacks but as devot Nike guy I am a little disappointed with the overall product since they took over the NFL appearal this year. I would have expected more Seahawk like uniforms or more edge to the traditional colors and GOD knows the SKINS uniforms could have used a face life with the exception of the arrow throwbacks. Still the TOP in my opinion.

I like the colors of the new uniforms but a couple things would make them stand out. Get rid of the leather helmet. add white and gold feathers on the helmet like a native american headdress and more yellowish gold for the pants

I too was a bit underwhelmed and disappointed when watching UStream, but having seen the high-res versions of the helmet and uniform, I really think it’s a beautiful design. Other than Orakpo’s pants having a bit too much fabric in crotch area, great job! Maybe it’s missing the cup or some padding.

I would have put the white feather down the middle of the helment. I agree with above…..terrible attempt at gold pants. They llok like FSU. As far as regular uniforms, they should go back to the 1970’s smaller, multi strips on the sleeves burgandy for home white for away with the current yellow/gold pants. The white pants, burgandy jersey of today are too much like the Gibbs erea. New coach, new QB, younger team….let’s go back to the future.

Been Redskin fan since 1948 and seen all uniforms since then new uniforms go down as one of the one of the less appealing.

You guys are CRAZY! Life long Redskins fan, never liked the yellow pants. tolerated them for the good of the team, and well, they’re just pants. But these new uniforms? i think we need to wear them more than half of the time. They are imposing, minimalist, and classy. But perhaps most notably, they do not stand out. This is a competitive advantage for the Redskins, as opposing teams will have a harder time seeing our players. But more than that? i think we need a little fresh change around here. We’ve got an all star coaching staff, great players, and all the potential in the world. Why not new uniforms?? And from a practicality standpoint, these are colors that people can actually wear casually( You won’t catch me in Bright Yellow and Red on a saturday night! ). You will sell A LOT more Redskins apparel this way. Maybe we could compete with big apparel sports clubs like the Red Sox, or the Seahawks( better than you would think). And, its not like they changed the colors of our team, they just darkened them a little. These are BY FAR the best uniforms in the NFL. This fan is very excited! SKINS WIN, SKINS WIN!

Been following the Redskins almost 40 years now…been to the lowest of lows, and the highest of highs, but these uniforms, are without a doubt, nothing to be proud of. The Uniforms they SHOULD be wearing are the ones they wore as “throwbacks” 5 years ago, in Sean Taylors final year….the 1971-72 Uniforms….the Gold Helmets with the “R” on the side…the classiest Throwback Uniforms in the League….period.

I like the anniversary uniforms (please, don’t call them “throwbacks”). I would hope, however, that all of the players will be sporting black cleats (high-tops, if possible)!
