‘Discovery’s’ Flyover From Redskins Park
Posted by on April 17, 2012 – 1:34 pmIt’s not uncommon to hear the dull roar of an incoming 747 as they fly over Redskins Park several dozen times per day. Head coach Mike Shanahan is a generally soft-spoken man, which presents an added element of secrecy during his post-practice press conferences.
But while planes can be a minor nuisance in-season, today they were cause for great celebration, as one carrying the Space shuttle Discovery flew over around 10 a.m.
The plane took off from the Kennedy Space Center and was carrying the precious cargo to the Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. Space enthusiasts, police officers (and people running late for work) pulled over to the side of the road on Rt. 28 and the Loudoun County Parkway, watching the plane descend.
This is the final scheduled flight for NASA’s shuttle program, which was officially retired last year. Discovery was the final active ship of the fleet, and made 39 successful missions in 27 years of service.
