Preseason Schedule Has A Familiar Feel

The NFL has released the 2012 preseason schedule today, and Redskins fans will find some familiar foes on the preseason docket.

The Redskins will open Week 1 (Aug. 9-11) on the road in Buffalo, a game that will be aired on NBC4 and CSN Washington. This is the 16th preseason meeting between the two teams, and the first since 2010.

While it is just a preseason game, Redskins players and fans will surely be reminded of the 0-23 rout in Toronto last year to these same Bills.  It’s the first contest of the preseason, but there could be some fireworks for the Burgundy and Gold, particularly on defense.

The Redskins will stay on the road for Week 2 (Aug. 17-18), travelling to Chicago for a Battle of the Midway with the Bears.  This will be the two teams’ 12th matchup all-time, and the first preseason matchup since 1976.  The game will be aired locally on NBC4 and CSN Washington.

Only one Redskins player currently on the Redskins’ roster (Sav Rocca, 38) was alive for the last contest, and he was likely preoccupied with other Australian toddler things.

On the flip-side of things, this could be a grudge match for Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who was picked off a career-high four times by cornerback DeAngelo Hall.  There is also no love lost from Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman, who was unceremoniously benched in his finals days as a Bear.

The Redskins will make their first appearance at FedExField in Week 3 of the preseason (Aug. 24-25) against the Indianapolis Colts.  The fabled ‘final dress rehearsal game’ for the regular season will likely feature the two top quarterbacks of the 2012 Draft, pitted against one another for the first time.

Fans and media will get the opportunity to make unfair, grandiose statements about the potential careers of both players, based off of one meaningless games.  The game is scheduled to be aired locally on NBC4 and CSN Washington, but could be selected later as a nationally televised game.

This will be the second-consecutive season that the teams will meet in the preseason, and the team-record-setting 21st time overall.  The all-time preseason record stands at 10-10, and appears to be the highlight of the preseason schedule.

The Redskins will close out their preseason schedule with a Week 4 (Aug. 30-31) game against the Buccaneers, at home for the second year in a row.  This will be the 12th all-time preseason meeting between the two teams, as the Redskins currently hold a 6-5 advantage.

As it currently sits, Raheem Morris and Jonathan Crompton will take part in this game, but as members of the Redskins.  Crompton was a backup quarterback option for the Bucs last season, and was released in the final roster cuts by his then head coach Morris.

Along with former Buccaneers’ general manager Bruce Allen on the squad, this is shaping up to be an interesting preseason matchup as well.  It will also be aired locally on NBC4 and CSN Washington.

For those of you pining for the traditional preseason matchup between the Redskins and Ravens or Steelers, you’ll have to wait until the regular season in 2012.  The season schedule has not been officially announced yet, but the Redskins will face both the Ravens and Steelers during the regular season: Ravens at home, Steelers on the road.

The Redskins will face the Buccaneers both in the preseason and regular season in 2012, at home during the preseason and on the road during the regular season.

An unrelated thank you to readers:

The numbers are in, and yesterday was the single-highest traffic day in Redskins Blog history.  The primary interest surrounded the Nike jersey hype, and led to more than 45,000 domain hits from midnight to 11:59 p.m.  Perhaps the more impressive stat is the global interest in Redskins jerseys, as folks from 104 countries clicked through to see the new Redskins apparel.

Here’s a look at the global hits map.  Fitting that the numbers are Burgundy and Gold:

This calls for a big Redskins thank you to everyone that read, re-posted, and passed the information along.  Thank you, one and all.  HTTR–Brian.
