Gaffney Gets A New Serenity Prayer Tattoo

Anyone who has ever gotten a tattoo knows that maximum contact sports like football don’t mix well with fresh ink. It takes several weeks for the skin to heal, or risk damaging the design.
Good thing Gaffney has two weeks before the team officially re-assembles at Redskins Park for the start of offseason training. Gaffney will look to build on an impressive first season in Washington, in which he was the team’s leader in receptions, yardage, and receiving touchdowns.
He will also look to find a renewed sense of serenity in his life, a reminder of which will be forever printed on the right side of his torso. Have a look (via @JabarGaffney):

For those of you unfamiliar with the Serenity Prayer, I refer you to the official Wikipedia page, which suggests that Reinhold Niebuhr wrote the prayer in the 1940s. Or maybe he didn’t:
Niebuhr himself was quoted in the January, 1950 Grapevine as saying the prayer “Of course, it may have been spooking around for years, even centuries, but I don’t think so. I honestly do believe that I wrote it myself.”
Which is a fabulous argument against plagiarism. In any event, Gaffney tweeted that he got the tattoo done in Orlando, it took three hours to finish, and it didn’t hurt as bad as other tattoos he’s had. In other words, Serenity Now.
Gaffney is the second Redskins receiver to get inspirational new ink this offseason, as Leonard Hankerson accessorized his arms in February.
Let’s hope Gaffney’s path to serenity leads to many more receptions and ‘Landover Leaps‘ in 2012.
