Garçon: Philanthropist, Social Media Mogul

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 29, 2012 – 4:25 pm

It has come to my attention that new Redskins receiver Pierre Garçon has finally switched over the layout of his personal web page, PierreGarconLive.com, to reflect his new team colors.  The site is full of pictures, blogs, links to his foundation, and Haitian pride.

Garçon is of Haitian descent, and was instrumental in sending aid to his family’s island following the earthquakes in early 2010.  For those of you who might not remember, he played in the Super Bowl that year with a heavy heart, and dedicated it to “creating smiles in Haiti.” (via CBS):

Sounds like the Redskins may have added yet another character guy to the roster, who will become a pillar of service in the community.  His community of choice is just an ocean away.

It’s a little awkward with the Colts jersey, but it will certainly do until his new jersey and numbers have been assigned.  Which brings us to the discussion of his new numbers.  As a veteran, Garçon could possibly pull rank on Hankerson for No. 85, but told Redskins.comTV that he was unlikely to do that.

“I’m looking for a new start here, I think,” he said.  And his updated Twitter handle (@PierreGarcon15) would suggest that he’s settled on the number last held by Todd Collins in 2009.  I hope he calls Todd first.

His Twitter picture also shows him shaking President Barack Obama’s hand.  Clearly, he has good networking skills:

Garçon joins the modern athlete in controlling his own message by breaking news first.  Ever wonder how the world first found out about Garçon’s signing in Washington?  That would be on his own personal Facebook page:

Surf, tweet, follow, poke, friend, subscribe and like accordingly, Redskins Nation.  Garçon came to Washington to help the offense make headlines, but he isn’t afraid to report on it either.

Thanks for your words of wisdom, it’s really appreciated. So are you actually working at Redskins Park? And if I may ask, I’m dying to know how you got the opportunity to do what you do.
