[Editor’s Disclaimer: Please remember that the Redskins do not have a player selected for April’s Draft, they merely hold the second overall pick. Even if there isn’t much secrecy left in this process, there is still formality, and the only team that can have any player is the Colts with the first overall pick. Anything after that is still a possibility. We will continue to respect the draft process, in the best interests of the team and the player.]
Yesterday, Robert Griffin III looked and acted the part of an NFL quarterback at Baylor’s Pro Day in Waco, Texas. He completed 73 passes–all but a handful–of which only two were uncatchable.
He had rhythm and timing, and he oozed confidence and charisma. He was exactly what every player should be at his Pro Day, and ESPN got three hours of must-see programming out of it.
Probably Griffin’s most-striking feature was the fact that he was having fun out there. With his future, draft slot, and millions of the dollars on the line, he was loose with his teammates and particularly enjoyed the music being piped in on the PA system.
“Just in case you were wondering, the music was scripted,” Griffin said after his day was finished. “I don’t think you’ll hear ‘Thriller’ at any other Pro Day.”
“We wanted it to not be so uptight, like the Combine can be,” he continued. “That’s not a knock on the Combine, but we just wanted it to be loose, having guys smiling, having fun. So when I was throwing, it was my playlist.”
At least he has good taste in music.
“I mean, it had to be edited a little bit, ’cause I’m an R&B guy myself, but we put some rap on there for some of the guys. They’d be mad if Usher started coming on and playing.”
Yeah! These are his Confessions.
It also ended up being an infomercial on the Redskins, who had many prominent personnel executives in attendance. General manager Bruce Allen was seen laughing and conversing with Baylor head coach Art Briles, while head coach Mike Shanahan shared several secret handshakes with RG3 (via CSN Washington):
Brilliant work by whoever worked the slow-mo version of the handshake into the video. You can almost make out the twinkle in Shanahan’s eye.
Griffin was asked about his relationship with Shanahan in his media session, and largely deferred assessment to Shanahan.
“I can’t speak on behalf of Coach Shanahan. He’s been through a lot more than I have,” he said humbly. “Of course, since Elway, he hasn’t really had that guy that you can associate him with. But hopefully I can be that guy if I’m available at that spot.”
“And I’ll be excited to be that guy.”
Also of note: despite growing up in Texas, Griffin reported that he is not a Cowboys fan. And he likes ‘Thriller?’ That’s too perfect.
