He may not know his career destination until April 26th, but Heisman-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III was in Redskins Country on Saturday, signing autographs and take pictures with sports fans.

The event was the Collectors’ Showcase of America’s annual sports memorabilia show at the Dulles Expo Center.  Grffin didn’t speak with the media, but area fans shared their own excitement with CSNWashington, gushing about dreams of RG3 in B&G.

Players Out This Weekend, And Other Clips

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 30, 2012 – 5:10 pm

The gap between the start of free agency and the draft can be one of the longest of the NFL calendar year, but this is a good weekend for your Redskins fix.  Lots of players will be out and about in the community this weekend, and you can catch some of them at the following events:

Anthony Armstrong is hosting a Celebrity All-Star basketball game tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Stafford High School. (Address: 33 Stafford Indian Lane, Fredericksburg, VA 22405).   Redskins and Ravens fans will be treated to a jointly-hosted event by Armstrong and Maryland grad Torrey Smith in Fredericksburg, Va.  This is the second annual “Ravens vs. Redskins themed Celebrity Basketball Game,” and brings great football players together for a great cause.  Proceeds to benefit Armstrong’s Lucky13 Charitable Foundation.

(via Mike Jones, Washington Post): Collectors’ Showcase of America sports memorabilia show Saturday at the Dulles Expo Center. (Address: 4320 Chantilly Center, Chantilly, Virginia 20151).  Redskins players Lorenzo Alexander, Roy Helu, Evan Royster and Darrel Young, along with former Redskins Dexter Manley, Ravin Caldwell, Maxie Baughan, Darryl Grant, Keith Griffin, Roy Jefferson, Bob Kuziel, Paul Laaveg, Walt Rock, Lonnie Sanders, as well as former defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon and former general manager Charley Casserly are expected to be in attendance.

(via Susan Jenkins, Crofton Patch): Meet Josh Wilson at the new Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Waugh Chapel Towne Centre.   (Address: 1417 South Main Chapel Way, Crofton Md.)  The store will give out wristbands starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Wilson will be at the store from 1-3 p.m. The store will also give away Columbia T-shirts while supplies last.

Pres. Bill Clinton’s fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting in Washington, D.C. Anthony Armstrong, Joshua Morgan, and former Redskins receiver Donte’ Stallworth are expected to be in attendance.  The events brings together more than 1,000 students, representing all 50 states, more than 75 countries, and approximately 300 college and universities, along with leaders in business, nonprofit, government and celebrities engaged in efforts to create positive change.

In other news, a slow week at Redskins Park means that it was a busy week for players with their families.  Here are a few of the pictures that players shared of their families on Twitter: Read more »

Luck Talks Spider Two-Y Bananas, Tonight

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 30, 2012 – 2:54 pm

It took seven months and 1,200 posts, but I’ve finally worked the word ‘banana’ into a post.

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck makes his televised job interview debut tonight, with the return of Jon Gruden’s QB Camp at 7 p.m. on ESPN.  As a player who might just be available at No. 2 in this April’s draft, it would behoove Redskins fans to DVR the program and see how Luck acts in the meeting room.

The of the interview revolves around Luck’s ability to diagnose Gruden’s play, delightfully called “Green Right Slot Spider Two-Y Banana.”  Here is a brief clip from tonight’s conversation: Read more »

Wedding Cake Of Ryan Kerrigan’s Helmet

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 30, 2012 – 11:49 am

A new standard has been set for girlfriends, fiancées and wives in the greater Washington area: will she allow you to have a Redskins-themed wedding cake?

For one lucky man, the answer is yes, even though his Wisconsin-native bride-to-be is a staunch supporter of cheese and Packers.  The couple’s big day is on Saturday, but the fine folks at Jennifer’s Pastries made sure that he had a Redskins-themed cake for his bachelor’s party the night before:

The attention to detail is outstanding, right down to the emblem and the No. 91.  But the best part might be the story behind Kerrigan’s initial meeting with the cake artist. Read more »

Garçon: Philanthropist, Social Media Mogul

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 29, 2012 – 4:25 pm

It has come to my attention that new Redskins receiver Pierre Garçon has finally switched over the layout of his personal web page, PierreGarconLive.com, to reflect his new team colors.  The site is full of pictures, blogs, links to his foundation, and Haitian pride.

Garçon is of Haitian descent, and was instrumental in sending aid to his family’s island following the earthquakes in early 2010.  For those of you who might not remember, he played in the Super Bowl that year with a heavy heart, and dedicated it to “creating smiles in Haiti.” (via CBS):

Sounds like the Redskins may have added yet another character guy to the roster, who will become a pillar of service in the community.  His community of choice is just an ocean away.

It’s a little awkward with the Colts jersey, but it will certainly do until his new jersey and numbers have been assigned.  Which brings us to the discussion of his new numbers.  As a veteran, Garçon could possibly pull rank on Hankerson for No. 85, but told Redskins.comTV that he was unlikely to do that. Fans Excited For Orakpo’s Madden Defeat

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 29, 2012 – 2:48 pm

AP Image

Redskins fans have rightfully earned the reputation as some of the most-loyal in all of sports, showing constant Washington patriotism.  So it’s not everyday that Redskins Nation rallies to gleefully crush one of their players in a national contest.

But they did it in the best interests of that player, Brian Orakpo, who made it to the round of 32 in the Madden ’13 Cover Bracket, before getting smoked by Victor Cruz.  Although Orakpo won’t have the exposure of the Madden cover, fans realize that he’ll continue his dominance only if he stays healthy.

Evidently, Redskins Nation isn’t in the mood to tempt the Madden Curse, with the mere suggestion sending fans into a tizzy.  Here is a sampling of blog comments from the stories:

Shanahan: Hightower A Target To Return

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 29, 2012 – 12:07 pm

AP Image

One of the indications of a stable franchise is the practice of re-signing it’s own players in free agency.  It proves that players will choose the familiarity of their team over other potential suitors.  It proves that the team is producing and developing talent worth bringing back.

And it also justifies the price that it cost to bring certain players in.

On the eve of last year’s training camp, the Redskins executed a trade to bring in Cardinals’ running back and Episcopal product, Tim Hightower.  After an exciting preseason, Hightower was just hitting his regular season stride when a bad cut against the Carolina Panthers left him on injured reserve.

As a pending free agent, Hightower was a regular at the facilities, rehabbing a torn ACL and showing coaches that he’s committed to a strong return.  At age 26, he presumably still has quality years left, and head coach Mike Shanahan told gathered media in Palm Beach, Fla. that a reunion was a strong possibility (via Rich Campbell of the Washington Times): Read more »

USA Today Names Its Free Agent Winners

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 28, 2012 – 5:03 pm

And the Redskins are one of the teams listed.

The USA Today singles out 15 teams as either winners or losers after two weeks of free agency, and the Redskins have landed on the right side of the equation.  Most free agent power rankings are picked clean at this point, so where the Redskins sit is roughly how they’ll be judged for this free agent class.

For the second consecutive year, the Redskins have been looked to as big players in free agency, but have showed savvy restraint by avoiding the big-name, high-risk personalities.  While fans have been forced to learn the names of underrated free agents (i.e. Stephen Bowen, Joshua Morgan), the results have shown that “calculated” is the new offseason motto in Washington.

Here’s what the USA Today’s Nate Davis said about the Redskins shopping list in 2012: Read more »

Redskins In NFL’s 2011 Highlights…Barely

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 28, 2012 – 4:00 pm

via NFL.com

Yesterday afternoon, NFL.com released a video entitled “The Season in Six Minutes,” meant to look back at the 2011 season in a “special six-minute presentation.”  For Redskins fans, it’s six minutes that they likely won’t appreciate, or get back.

Of 362 possible seconds that the Redskins could have been featured (for better or for worse) Redskins’ footage is limited to part of one play, which takes approximately two and one-half seconds.  The highlight was of Roy Helu’s infamous hurdle in Seattle, one of the top plays of the NFL season, and the first touchdown of Helu’s promising career.

That is all the attention that the Redskins got.  But it could be worse, and here are several reasons why: Read more »
