Hall Of Fame cornerback Darrell Green remains one of the most beloved Redskins of all time, and rightfully so. With each story that I post on the Redskins great, I hear more and more stories from fans with fond memories of No. 28.
On the field, he was an electric playmaker with 258 career starts over 20 years, 64 career takeaways, eight defensive touchdowns, and seven Pro Bowl appearances.
Off the field, he had at least as profound of an impact, from his leadership in the locker room to his compassion in the community. And now, with the help of Home & Design Magazine’s Julie Sanders, we can take a look inside his humble abode:
Sanders goes on to provide a fairly comprehensive interview of what’s new in Green’s world, including his recent ventures into health and fitness. To no one’s surprise, the former athlete has incorporated sports into his home design, in the interests of keeping a happy, healthy family:
For the past 11 years, the Greens have lived in a gracious Northern Virginia house, part of an NVHomes development. Perched on two acres that slope down behind, the property is definitely part of the neighborhood. Over the years, it has served as a magnet for their three kids (now all grown) and their friends. “The concept was a pool, basketball court, pool table and home theater,” says Jewell. “We wanted to bring the kids into the house.”
Sanders also delved into the mindset of the man who spent two decades on the gridiron, to discover how he was able to keep his passion and focus despite success and off-the-field interests:
“We’re very fortunate with our perspective. The world saw me as a Washington Redskin, but I always saw myself as a father and husband trying to take care of my family. I saw football as a job. That’s probably why I lasted 20 years at it.”
The piece is very informative, and sheds some light on the private life of one of the most-beloved Washington athletes. But perhaps the most important message to take away from Green’s story (and awesome house) is his ability to see his dreams through to reality. He says it best, himself:
“I dreamed of this,” Darrell Green says, waving his hand expansively around the comfortable yet elegant home he shares with his wife of 27 years. “I didn’t see this exact street of life, but with my marriage, my kids, I am close. I am definitely in the neighborhood.”
