Stallworth Flashes Back To Grant Union HS

One of the most active Redskins media socialites so far this offseason has been receiver Donte’ Stallworth, who has launched many of his thoughts, musings and cosmic inquiries into Twitterverse.  If you don’t follow him (@DonteStallworth), I recommend it.

Today’s notable tidbit comes to us via his new favorite app, instagr.am picture sharing:

No need for apologies, Donte’.  Just keep celebrating #ThrowbackThursday with pictures from your high school days:

Back in the olden days of 1996, Stallworth was a hot shot track and football star, playing in the California state championship on a team that boasted three future NFL players (Stallworth, Onterrio Smith, Parris Warren).

According to his University of Tennessee bio, Stallworth started two years at Grant Union as wide receiver and cornerback.  As a senior, he led the team with 56 receptions for 1289 yards and 23 touchdowns.  Naturally, he was voted league co-MVP, All-State defensive back and USA Today honorable mention All-American, and the California player of the year.   Grant Union had a 24-3 record with Stallworth in the lineup, winning the sectional championship and reaching state finals his senior year.

If you’ll note from the picture, the long hair was still years away, as was the No. 19, but the breakaway speed was already in the bank.  From the looks of this highlight video of the 1996-97 season, his blocking ability was fairly refined as well:

In case you missed it, look again.  Maybe not a textbook block, but he clearly developed his selfless football demeanor at an early age:

Stallworth has come a long way in the 15 years since, and his presence on this Redskins goes a lot further than what he accomplished on the field.  Happy Throwback Thursday, one and all.

That next to last sentence says alot. Just ask some of the other receivers how they feel about Stalllworth, the guy clearly has turned his life around and has become not only a better player and person, but a great mentor as well.
