A Shift Back On ESPN’s All-Division Team

In gauging division honors over the course of a 16-game season, it’s logical that the cream will rise to the top and the best of the best will be fairly set in stone.  But with the inconsistency of the entire NFC East this season, it’s been difficult to determine who is not only the best, but can perform most consistently.

In this week’s edition of Dan Graziano’s ESPN NFC East Blog’s “All-NFC East Team,” there are a new set of seven Redskins representing the best in the division at their position.  The honors are based on a body of work over the course of a season, with wry commentary to follow.

The 2012 Social Showdown: #BeatPhilly

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 28, 2011 – 6:09 pm

While the Redskins are battling the Eagles on Sunday, you can help the Burgundy and Gold win off the field as well.  Rep your Redskins and show the Eagles that the Redskins are the “trendy” team in the new year.

Here’s how:

1. Get “#BeatPhilly” trending this week in the lead up to the game.  Follow @Redskins and use the hastage for a chance to win a “Beat Philly” T-shirt prize pack, a team-signed autographed football, and other cool prizes.

2. Visit the Social Showdown site during Sunday’s game and “Like” the Redskins.  At the end of the game, the “Likes” will be tallied, and the team with the most, wins. But you have to do both in order to help the Redskins, so let’s #BeatPhilly!

Here are some early examples from your fellow fans: Read more »

Week 17 Power Rankings Roundup

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 28, 2011 – 5:51 pm

With only one game left in the season, the Redskins are guaranteed to finish in the bottom half of the power rankings once again–perhaps in the bottom quarter.

The last time the Redskins faced the Eagles this season, they were ranked No. 10 in the pregame power rankings, riding a division-leading 3-1 start to the season.  The Eagles limped into town at 1-4, looking to get back on track.

The loss to the Eagles was a costly one in terms of injuries and momentum, and the Redskins never recovered.  Free-falling over the next five games, the Redskins settled into the upper 20’s on most power rankings.  With a disappointing loss to the Vikings last week, they ensured that they will remain in the 20’s until next season.

Here’s your holiday week spread of NFL power rankings: Read more »

Adam Carriker Resembles ‘Ivan Drago’?

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 28, 2011 – 2:11 pm

It recently came to my attention, via an interview on AM 1620 in Omaha, that some think Redskins defensive Adam Carriker looks like the Russian fighter ‘Ivan Drago’ from Rocky IV, played by Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren.

Certainly both are physical specimens, with Lungren standing 6-6, 250 pounds in his Rocky-prime.  Carriker is also 6-6, and his NFL playing weight is 315 pounds.

For the record, I don’t see the resemblance, but here’s the audio from his interview on the “Schick and Nick” show:

I chatted with Carriker briefly this morning, who reiterated that he doesn’t see the resemblance and neither does his wife.  But as far as taking a compliment for looking like Lundgren, he’s not about to complain.

“I think everyone who says it is just jealous of my good looks,” he joked.

Fletcher Calls It A Snub, Others Agree

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 28, 2011 – 12:42 pm

Last night’s announcement of Pro Bowl rosters came and went without a mention of any Washington Redskins.  The argument be made for multiple snubs, but there are probably none greater than linebacker London Fletcher.

With one game left to be played, coaches’ stats have Fletcher at an NFL-leading 200 tackles on the season, a career year for the 36-year-old defensive captain.  For the record, the second place player on this list has 145.  Patrick Willis and Brian Urlacher, the two NFC Pro Bowl selections, rank 36th and 38th respectively.

Now, I’ve heard the argument that winning teams get more appreciation, and I understand that Fletcher spends more time on the field than linebackers in truly dominant defenses.  But he has been a veritable vacuum in the middle of this defense, leading a group that includes players 14 years his junior.

In addition to his titanic tackle numbers, he also has 1.5 sacks, 14 quarterback pressures, two interceptions, nine passes defensed, and three forced fumbles.  If you’re wondering what else he could possibly do on defense, you’re not the only one:

Fletcher has gone most of his career as a forgotten man, starting every game since 2000, and quietly keying his defense to greatness.  He wasn’t alone in feeling like he got snubbed.

Middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch, for the Detroit Lions, reached out to Fletcher after the announcement: Read more »

Redskins From Fairfax Able To Stay Local

Yesterday, the Redskins honored Centreville High School head football coach Chris Haddock with the 2011 Redskins High School Coach of the Year award.

Haddock joined host Larry Michael and Redskins center Will Montgomery on “Redskins Nation” to discuss his successful season.  Montgomery never played under Haddock, but is one of the most prominent alumni of the Centreville football program.

Yesterday was an opportunity for Haddock and Montgomery to reconnect on a relationship that began during Haddock’s interview process at Centreville.

“He actually sat on the panel when I interviewed for the coaching job at Centreville High School,” Haddock said.  “It was impressive to me that the school took the time to reach out to, obviously, one of their most prominent alumni.  He was interested enough to make time in his schedule to help out, and that impressed me a lot about what they wanted to do.”

Montgomery was a three-sport athlete and high school, and Haddock coached against him in football and baseball at Chantilly High School.  Once Haddock took the job at Centreville, Montgomery has been supportive every step of the way.

“I had him come back and speak to the kids last year, before one of our games,” Haddock recalled.  “We do team dinners on Thursday nights before games, and he came out and talked to the kids about preparation and doing things the right way.

“I think the kids were really impressed that here was a Washington Redskin who dressed in the same locker rooms that they did and played on the same field that they did–here he was talking to them.” Read more »

Charitable Foundation Scholar Succeeding

Last May, Yasmine Arrington, a senior at Benjamin Banneker High School, was in the middle of one of the last math tests that she would take in high school, when she was paged to the office.  Certain that she had heard the announcement wrong, and focused on the test, she tried to concentrate on the problem on the paper.

Then she was paged again.  And again.  So she stood up and walked down to the office.

When she arrived, she was greeted by an office official, who told her: “You’re in big trouble, Missy.”

“I was so scared,” she remembered, with a laugh.  “I just wanted to graduate on time.”

She continued into the office to the Guidance Suite, where the counselors were all gathered around a desk.  Her principal handed her the phone, and on the other end of the line was Redskins owner, Daniel M. Snyder.

That “trouble” that she was told she was in was Snyder congratulating her for being the recipient of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation’s $25,000 scholarship. Read more »

Olsen Brings Artistic Prowess To Football

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 27, 2011 – 4:32 pm

Offensive linemen are known for having a “mean streak” or extra grittiness, and reserve offensive guard Eric Olsen is no exception.  His playing style was described in his Notre Dame player bio as “fiesty and aggressive.”

But he has another side off the field.  He watches Family Guy and Modern Family.  He wishes he had Jessie’s girl.  He only gained two pounds over the holidays.  He moonlights as a part time Super Hero.  And he loves art.

At Notre Dame, Olsen was enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters and majored in industrial design.  He hasn’t used his artistic skill for work yet, but he does enjoy doodling.  Here’s some of the work that he’s done, depicting famous rap/hip hop icons Lil’ Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Rick Ross:

Gaffney’s Grab Makes ESPN Top Plays

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 27, 2011 – 3:04 pm

On Saturday, receiver Jabar Gaffney tied his career-high in touchdown receptions (5, New England 2007), and did it in spectacular fashion.

With six minutes left in the third quarter and the ball at the Vikings 5-yard line, Grossman dropped back to pass. Gaffney did a simple slant from the right side, and got one-on-one coverage in the middle of the end zone.  Grossman fired the ball to him high, the only place where Gaffney could make a play.

And he did: Read more »
