Alma Mater Bowl Battle Continues Tonight

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 29, 2011 – 5:00 pm

It must be college football bowl season in the Redskins locker room, as intra-team smack talk has risen to a new level.  Last night saw the resolution to the Holiday Bowl between Lorenzo Alexander’s Golden Bears and Brian Orakpo’s Longhorns.

Tonight’s matchup between Graham Gano’s Seminoles and Eric Olsen’s Fighting Irish in the Champs Sports Bowl has also yielded some wardrobe wagers: Read more »

Alexander Pays Dues For His Alma Mater

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 29, 2011 – 4:38 pm

Special teams captain Lorenzo Alexander is a native of Berkley, Calif. and a proud former California Golden Bear.  Only one thing could ever make him wear the colors of another team, and his name is Brian Orakpo.

The story behind the wardrobe dysfunction stems from last night’s game Holiday Bowl game between Alexander’s Bears and Orakpo’s Longhorns.  Orakpo–who has a penchant for making T-shirt bets–wagered a T-shirt appearance and media interview with Alexander, who accepted.

What transpired was a 21-10 Longhorns victory, and a humbling walk into the locker room for the One Man Gang.  He explains: Read more »

Robinson Earns Coaches’ Trust, Promotion

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 29, 2011 – 2:57 pm

When the Redskins selected receiver Aldrick Robinson in the sixth round (178th overall), they knew that they had raw talent on their hands.

Robinson hailed from Southern Methodist University and was indoctrinated into the Run-n-Shoot offense, which traditionally doesn’t translate smoothly to the pros.  But Robinson possessed game-changing speed, running a 4.35 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in April.

Rolling the dice on the speedster, Robinson got his first NFL opportunity in the second half of the first preseason game against Pittsburgh.  Back deep to return a punt, Robinson literally let opportunity slip through his hands–twice.  He muffed two consecutive punts, and that was his last appearance on the field.

“I was just too anxious to play I think,” he said after the game.  “I was running before I had the ball, looking downfield to see who I gotta make miss, before I even caught the ball. Basically I was trying to establish myself as a playmaker before I could even catch the punt.”

Robinson surmised at the time that his coaches had lost all trust in him, and that he would need to seek every opportunity to regain that trust.  At the end of training camp, he was stashed on the practice squad, left to find what few opportunities he could after everyone else. Read more »

Alexander Given ‘Media Good Guy Award’

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 29, 2011 – 12:22 pm

Via @granthpaulsen

Each year, it is a tradition for the media and beat reporters to award one player in the Redskins locker room with the annual “Media Good Guy Award.”

The award is given to the player that best helps the media do their job of covering the team, even in (and especially in) times of losing and disappointment.  While there was very little locker room drama this year, losing made it difficult to face reporters.

The 2011 award could have gone to a number of players that make up the core leadership of the Redskins, but the recipient was the most-deserving of them all.  Presenting the award on behalf of the media, was long-time beat reporter John Keim of the Washington Examiner: Read more »

A Shift Back On ESPN’s All-Division Team

In gauging division honors over the course of a 16-game season, it’s logical that the cream will rise to the top and the best of the best will be fairly set in stone.  But with the inconsistency of the entire NFC East this season, it’s been difficult to determine who is not only the best, but can perform most consistently.

In this week’s edition of Dan Graziano’s ESPN NFC East Blog’s “All-NFC East Team,” there are a new set of seven Redskins representing the best in the division at their position.  The honors are based on a body of work over the course of a season, with wry commentary to follow.
