Have you ever dreamed of being a professional athlete? Well believe it or not some professional athletes also dream of being professional athletes—in other sports, that is.
If he could, recently signed Redskins tight end Richard Quinn would like to switch places with NBA star LeBron James for a day.
Quinn was born and raised in Maple Heights, Ohio, which is about 40 minutes away from James’ hometown of Akron Ohio.
“I watched him when I was in Cleveland, watched him in high school and then getting drafted out of high school,” Quinn said. “Just the position he is in now made always wonder what it would be like to be in his shoes.”
Back in high school, Quinn had a strong case of the LBJ fever, as most people did in Ohio, at the time. Not only did they share a home state, but James was only one year ahead of Quinn in school.
“He was so popular in high school that going to one of his games was like going to a college game,” Quinn remembered. “Like, he had celebrities that would come in to see his game.”
Their closeness in proximity and age made James an idol for Quinn, who used James as motivation to advance his own athletic career.
“Definitely by seeing him play, it was some inspiration for me to do some things that he did,” Quinn said. “It made me go hard playing football.”
Two summers ago when James made “The Decision” to take his talents to South Beach, Quinn made the jump with him. James’ divorce from Cleveland fans was a little ridiculous in Quinn’s book.
“I feel like [the reaction] was a little bit too much, he gave Cleveland seven good years,” Quinn said. “I feel like he did the best he could.”
Maybe that’s the perspective of an adoring fan. Maybe that’s the perspective of a fellow pro athlete. But if Richard Quinn could try on anyone else’s sneakers for one day, it would be with No. 6 for the Miami Heat.
