Six Redskins On Latest All-Division Team

Each and every week, Dan Graziano puts together his list of the top players at each of the 27 positions in the NFC East.  In this week’s edition of his list, the Redskins were given six selections, the Cowboys eight, the Giants seven, and the Eagles six.

For the Redskins, it’s technically five, but it’s six honors.  Given that the Redskins are in last place in the division, that’s probably accurate, but here’s the rundown:

Fullback: Darrel Young, Redskins (Young)

Center: Will Montgomery, Redskins (Montgomery)

Outside linebacker: DeMarcus Ware, Cowboys; Ryan Kerrigan, Redskins (Ware, Brian Orakpo)

Inside linebacker: London Fletcher, Redskins; Sean Lee, Cowboys (Fletcher, Lee)

Kick returner: Brandon Banks, Redskins (Banks)

Punt returner: Brandon Banks, Redskins (Banks) Read more »

Guide To Army-Navy Pregame Ceremonies

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 7, 2011 – 3:14 pm

To anyone with tickets to this Saturday’s Army-Navy game at FedExField, you’re going to want to arrive early and take in all of the pageantry of the game.  Indeed, this game is much more than a game, and much closer to an All-American Football Event that fans won’t want to miss.

The respective military academy bands will get into action around 11 a.m., performing and parading as part of the tradition step-off and march onto the field.  This is one of the best pregame ceremonies in all of football, and each band will play for about 45 minutes.

After that, there will be a game ball presentation by the academy marathon teams.  A little before 1 p.m., players will be allowed to warm up on the field, about 90 minutes before kickoff.  The players will exit the field at about 2:15 p.m. and prepare for pregame introductions.

Before kickoff, there will be service academy exchange of Cadets and Midshipmen, as well as an invocation by the Navy Chaplain.  As each team takes the field, there will be flyover by the respective branch’s aerial units.

All of this will happen before the 2:40 kickoff on CBS.  If you really want the full experience of an Army-Navy game, you ate strongly encouraged to show up early and take it all in.  Parking lots open at 8:30 a.m., and the early bird gets the proverbial worm.

For further preview, here’s Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder discussing the significance of the event with Redskins Nation’s Larry Michael: Read more »

Week 14 Power Rankings Roundup

Although the Redskins have lost the opportunity to finish with a winning season for the first time since 2007, they still have an opportunity for a two-win improvement over last season.  All they need to do now is win the last four meetings of the season.

Call it a long shot, but this team has shown that it can compete with the best when firing on all cylinders.  The key now is finding consistency, something that they have another opportunity to do this Sunday against the Patriots.

Check out a lunchtime buffet of the Week 14 NFL power rankings: Read more »

Americans, Redskins Lose A Great One

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 7, 2011 – 11:45 am

I’m not sure what the appropriate salutation is for Pearl Habor Day, since ‘happy’ doesn’t really seem appropriate.  On this date–which shall live in infamy–the United States was unwillingly plunged into a conflict, the likes of which the world had never seen.

Victory in World War II took the country’s greatest soldiers, comprised of some of the world’s bravest men.  One of those men was Theodore “Ted” Lapka, who answered the call to the Air Force in 1945, suspending his pro football career with the Redskins.

Mr. Lapka passed away last Thursday at the ripe old age of 91.  In his pro career, he played offensive end, and had 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his career.  He arrived the year after the team won the NFL Championships in 1942, and played for the Redskins from 1943-44 and 1946, sacrificing his 1945 season for the war.

He was one of the oldest remaining Redskins Alumni.

During Redskins Military Appreciation Week, we celebrate the life of Mr. Lapka, by looking back over his many accomplishments.  Here are some notable notes from his obituary, including the fact that he played football for the Air Force ‘Super Bombers’ while serving his country: Read more »

Roy Helu Has A Beard And A Noble Cause

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 7, 2011 – 9:52 am

Move over Movember, it’s time for DecemBEARD.

Redskins running back Roy Helu is spearheading an effort in the Redskins locker room, to sponsor facial air growth for the month of December.  His beard may not measure up to Chris Neild proportions, but his cause is just.

“You grow your facial hair and you get people to sponsor you,” he explained.  “They give all the profits to DecemBEARD, who partners with an organization called ‘Tiny Hands.’  They go to India, and they build up posts where they check for sex trafficking.

“The more money that gets donated, the more posts that gets built, and the people that are doing the trafficking are getting caught, which is a good thing.”

I think that’s something that we can all agree on, and an epidemic in some countries that gets forgotten in the United States. Tiny Hands is Helu’s charity of choice, but it’s part of a larger network called “I’ve Got A Name,” the faith-based conglomerate that organizes DecemBEARD.

Helu said that the scruffy look isn’t his first choice, but he’ll stick it out for a good cause.  In the mean time, he’s got a few sponsors in mind, because as he pointed out, “there’s some money in this locker room.”

Go get ’em, Rookie.

Shanahan A Little Sick Of Tom Brady Too

Posted by Brian Tinsman on December 7, 2011 – 9:00 am

In terms of personality, head coach Mike Shanahan is known best for his quiet sidelines intensity that permeates from his pigskin core.

But ask anyone that knows him, and they’ll tell you that he has a notable sense of humor, and a deadpan delivery style that would impress the folks at Saturday Night Live.

On Monday, Shanahan sat down with CSNWashington’s Chick Hernandez to discuss this weekend’s matchup against the New England Patriots.  He discussed, among other things, the competitive games that he’s had against Patriots coach Bill Belichick in the past, and some of the weapons at Belichick’s disposal.

Then Hernandez baited Shanahan, asking, “Are you as sick of Tom Brady as the rest of us are?”

And Shanahan shot back a quick, is-he-joking-or-serious response: Read more »
