Hall Focused On Picks, Wins Over Awards

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 30, 2011 – 5:26 pm

Earlier today, it was announced that Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall had been selected as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

That’s a major turnaround for a guy that told the media after the Cowboys game that if there’s finger-pointing to be made, he would want it at him.  Today in the locker room, the media was pointing fingers again–but in a good way.

Unfortunately for them, Hall wasn’t ready to take the good with the bad yet.  When asked how he felt about his seven passes defensed on Sunday, he had a few regrets

“Yeah, a lot of dropped picks, basically,” he said with a smirk.  “I definitely dropped a couple gifts. But, y’know, we got the win, and that’s kinda all that matters.”

“But it was a nice award, a nice honor.”

Hall rebounded physically and emotionally from any disappointments he weather during and after the Cowboys game.  This may not have been the statement game that he was looking for, but his efforts on defense were part of a larger team effort that won the game.

And that’s kinda all that matters.

Evan Royster Gets Grilled By Roommates

Posted by Christopher Mudd on November 30, 2011 – 5:04 pm

At some point in everyone’s life, you end up living with roommates. And usually, it’s part of the unspoken roommates code to leave work at work.

However, that’s easier said than done when you’re a professional athlete, playing for your roommate’s favorite team.

For Redskins’ running back Evan Royster, that scenario has become a reality.

Royster, a Virginia born native, went to Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia. He was activated before last weekend’s game against the Seahawks, and Sunday saw the first regular season action of his career.

Being from the area, his activation to the 53-man roster created quite a buzz among family and friends.

“The guy I live with is a huge Redskins fan, and the moment I got activated he was calling me and asking me questions,” he said.  “Y’know, that’s just how it is when you play for the hometown team.” Read more »

Renewing The Cofield Vs. Mangold Rivalry

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 30, 2011 – 3:58 pm

When the Jets and Redskins take the field on Sunday, it will entail the renewal of an old matchup between Redskins nose tackle Barry Cofield and Jets center Nick Mangold.  Growing up four hours apart on I-71 in Ohio, the two have been battling it out in the football trenches for more than a decade.

“I’ve been playing against Nick since high school,” Cofield remembered with a smile.  “We played in a high school all-star game against each other.”

Back in those days, Cofield attended Cleveland Heights High School and lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track and field.  Mangold went to Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, and lettered in football, wrestling, and track and field.

At 300-plus pounds a piece, I’m guessing that they both specialized in the “and field” segments of track and field. Read more »

Nation’s Greatest Rivalry Coming To D.C.

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 30, 2011 – 2:53 pm

One week from Saturday, on Dec. 10, the Redskins will welcome one of the oldest and most storied sports rivalries to Washington.  For the first time in it’s 112-game history, the annual Army-Navy game will be played in the Nation’s Capital, at FedExField.

At today’s Army-Navy Press Luncheon, Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder spoke about the privilege of hosting an event with  such prestige and tradition.

“It’s humbling,” Mr. Snyder said.  “This is a really humbling experience.  To host this game here, with the backdrop of the Pentagon and the Nation’s Capital, for the first time ever, it means so much for us.

“We’re so appreciative to the Naval Academy and West Point to honor us, and to let us honor you by having this great game here.”

Navy Athletic Directior Chet Gladchuk discussed the significance of the game at FedExField, and discussed how impressed he was with the preparation by the Redskins and the Washington community as a whole. Read more »

Week 13 Power Rankings Roundup

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 30, 2011 – 1:41 pm

AP Image

A lot has been said about the character in the Redskins locker room this season, it was only a matter of time until it paid off.  Given the long odds of beating a team on a roll, on the road, in the wind and rain, after a short week of practice, I don’t know that a low-character team wins on Sunday.  I don’t know that any road team can come back from 10 points down with 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter and score two touchdowns, without a huge dose of leadership.

It was a total team win, and they needed everyone on board.

This week, they’re being universally rewarded for their efforts.

Cofield: Good To Get A Win For The Fans

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 30, 2011 – 12:37 pm

When the Redskins won on Sunday evening in Seattle, there was an uneasiness that followed the team buses back to the airport.  It took me a while to put my finger on it, but as I watched the very subdued celebration on the team plane, it occurred to me.

This team had forgotten how to relax after a win.

Following each of the six losses in a row, the team had becoming accustomed to facing a skeptical media and promising to do better.  After a hard-fought victory on Sunday, Redskins nose tackle Barry Cofield explained that it almost felt foreign.

“It was almost like a weird feeling, as sad as that is,” he said with a chuckle.  “It’s been so long, you just didn’t–you didn’t know how to react.”

But as losing can be to players, Cofield understands that the biggest burden is carried by their family members and the fans.

“It was great for your family and your friends, and the fans that really care about what’s going on,” he said.  “Obviously, we’re so caught up in the moment that we’ve gotta come back to practice.  But those guys, they have to live with it all week.

“So it was good to get a win for them.”
