Redskins Serve Homeless A Holiday Meal

Most Redskins players won’t get to spend Thanksgiving with their families, but that doesn’t prevent them from brightening the holidays of other families in need.

This afternoon, running back Ryan Torain and right tackle Jammal Brown served lunch to families at the Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Loudoun Homeless Services Center in Leesburg, Va.

“It’s good to help the community out,” said Torain, in between handing out boxes.  “The most important part of holidays is getting together with your family and loved ones.  Even though I can’t really do that today, I’m out here with these people and their families and I just wanna give back.”

Torain said that after he was done in Leesburg, he was going to travel back to spend time with his friends on the team–his “second family.”

Brown was scheduled to help out with the Harvest Feast at the stadium on Tuesday, but had to put in extra physical therapy in order to be ready for the game on Sunday.  He joined the event at the Loudoun Homeless Services Center after the fact, so he could still give back.

“Luckily, there was this event today where I can help make these kids’ holiday,” Brown said.  “With the position that I’m in, I’m just blessed to be able to share that with other people and try to make their day.”

The boxed lunches were provided by Johnny Rockets, and consisted of a Turkey Single, Sweet Potato Fries, a slice of Apple Pie and bottle of water.  The food was served from the Johnny Rockets’ mobile restaurant, which was first introduced on July 30 at Redskins training camp.

The mobile restaurant provides a unique way to take Johnny Rockets’ warm, friendly service and feel-good atmosphere, literally, on the road.  Its 22-foot kitchen and 14-foot trailer enable efficient food preparation and distribution, and the mobile restaurant format affords a new venue for consumers to experience the classic American fare guests have enjoyed in Johnny Rockets restaurants for the past 25 years.

Opened in 2003, the Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Loudoun Homeless Services Center is a 44-bed shelter with an 89-day program offering intensive case management, life skills classes and children’s services along with basic necessities like food and shelter.
