Costa, Bowen Settle ‘Barkgate’ Scandal

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 17, 2011 – 2:07 pm

Remember Turf-gate?  Remember the barking spider infestation in Dallas?

Those were the something-from-nothing storylines that followed the first time the Redskins and Cowboys met up in Week 3 in Dallas.  Slick footing for Redskins players on the synthetic turf field led to conspiracy theories of sabotage.  Four botched Dallas snaps led to Cowboys center Phil Costa and quarterback Tony Romo accusing Redskins defensive end Stephen Bowen of barking out the snap count.

I smell an NFL-edition episode of Jerry Springer.

But apparently whatever inspired the notion of barking spiders on the Redskins line has since then been resolved.  As pointed out by our friend Mike Prada of SB Nation, Bowen spoke with the Dallas media yesterday about the upcoming game, and evidently the controversy has been muzzled.

Via Charean Williams of the Star Telegram:

“After that whole thing, Phil called me, and we talked, and it’s no big thing,” Bowen said on a conference call. “We’ve moved past that, and it’s all good.”

Well, count me among the disappointed.  I don’t need fabricated drama to enjoy football, but I would love to see Bowen have a heart-to-heart with Romo on Sunday.

“I have no idea, no idea [what Costa heard],” Bowen said. “I know that us guys up front, we weren’t saying anything. If I would have heard it, it probably would have made me jump. I know I had nothing to do with what he was hearing.”

Bowen initially was upset that his character was called into question. He said then that he had “lost a lot of respect for Costa.” But Bowen said Wednesday that the two made up in their phone conversation.

“That kind of caught me off guard,” Bowen said. “He called me and we talked. …I’m not going to talk about the details of conversation, but he’s a good player, and I respect him.”

And so passes one of the more bewildering footnotes in Redskins-Cowboys history.  Hopefully everyone will clean their ears and pack the proper cleats, so we can focus on football this Sunday.
