Bills’ Stats Still Crossing Canadian Border

Posted by Brian Tinsman on November 16, 2011 – 2:29 pm

The Week 8 game against the Buffalo Bills will definitely go down as one of the strangest games of the year for the Redskins.

  • First of all, it was played against a team that the Redskins rarely play, but haven’t beaten since the 1991 Super Bowl.
  • Secondly, it was played in a foreign country, which prints hockey games on their official currency.
  • Thirdly, it’s safe to say that the Redskins didn’t get the results they were hoping for.

And that was all during the game.  The real fun began after.

Three days after the game, we learned that instead of the nine sacks that the Bills’ defense had been credited with, there should have been 10.

And now, 17 days later, the NFL and Elias Sports Bureau have credited Redskins punter Sav Rocca with an additional punt downed inside the 20.

Sporting news must simply take longer to travel across international boundaries.

The situation occurred in the first quarter, on the Redskins’ second possession.  The drive began on the Redskins 39 and stalled after a three-and-out on the Redskins 48.  On fourth-and-1, Rocca punted the ball to the Bills 10-yard line, where it was a fair caught by C.J. Spiller.  But a penalty on the Redskins moved the ball to the 20, and was ruled as not “inside the 20.”

But technically, it still counts.

The addition of his 18th punt inside the 20 this season moves him into a tie for the NFL lead.

His candid reaction to the news was one of genuine excitement.

“Really?  Sweet,” he said.  “That’s pretty cool.”

Rocca is having a great season for the Redskins, putting punters on the map in Washington for the right reasons.  In addition to his stats inside the 20, he is also one of only two punters with 39 or more tries and no touchbacks.

Given the situations that he’s been put into, he’s done almost everything that can be asked of him.  But don’t count him as complacent.

“I’m tied for eight in net average, and that’s what a lot of people look at as a standard for Pro Bowls,” he said.  “I enjoy it, it’s all good fun.  And the Pro Bowl, y’know, as long as I’m doing my job then the Pro Bowl really doesn’t matter.  I mean, you’d love to have it with you name, but whether you have it or not doesn’t really matter.”

Logically, the league’s emphasis on averages promotes the punters from poor offensive teams.  If an offense stays backed up, the punter has the entire field to boom a punt away.  So it’s impressive for Rocca–who has consistently shorter fields to work with–to still have a high net and no touchbacks.

“Oh, absolutely field position matters,” he said.  “Earlier in the season, we had a whole lot of short punts, so dropping them inside the 20 became especially important then, and I take great pride in my ability to do that.”

But which stats is most important to Rocca?

“The most important thing right now is winning, and we’re not doing that.”

Touché, Saverio.

Remember to vote all of your favorite Redskins players to the Pro Bowl.
