On Thursday, Nov. 10, during its 98th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, the American Cancer Society awarded the NFL with of the Corporate Philanthropy Impact award. Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, is one of the leage’s national spokespeople for “A Crucial Catch,” the breast cancer awareness campaign, and accepted the award on behalf of the NFL.
Working in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, the National Football League has supported National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October the past three years with its A Crucial Catch – Annual Screening Saves Lives campaign. The initiative reminds women 40 and older about the importance of having an annual mammogram.
NFL players, coaches, and referees also help raise awareness about breast cancer by wearing pink game-day apparel throughout the month of October. The clothes, as well as special game balls and other paraphernalia, are auctioned at NFL Auction, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. In 2010, the NFL and their players donated more than $1 million to the Society as a result of the Crucial Catch campaign, with the majority of the donations coming from the sale of pink game-day items.
Corporate sponsors, like the NFL, were recognized for contributions of at least $1 million. Collectively, the 17 corporations recognized raised $36 million, which goes to help fund the $3.5 billion that the American Cancer Society has poured into funding research and prevention.
