Dwindling Numbers In All-Division Honors

And then there were five Redskins.

Does a team’s losing streak cause players to get fewer individual accolades, or do players under-perform and deserve fewer accolades?

Either way, only five Redskins were bestowed with All-NFC-East honors by ESPN.com’s Dan Graziano this week:

Fullback: Darrel Young, Redskins (Young)

Center: Will Montgomery, Redskins (Montgomery)

Inside linebacker: London Fletcher, Redskins; Sean Lee, Cowboys (Fletcher, Lee)

Kick returner: Brandon Banks, Redskins (Banks)

Punt returner: Brandon Banks, Redskins (Banks)

Last week, I made the argument that tight ends Fred Davis and Jason Witten have virtually identical stats, and that Davis should receive stronger consideration than he did.  However, after Davis had only an average day on Sunday and Witten added another touchdown, I can leave that one alone this week.

However, the argument of Steve Weatherford vs. Sav Rocca is really not in question: by the numbers, Rocca is flat-out better.  Have a look for yourself:

  Punts/Average/Net Avg./Touchbacks/Inside 20/Long

Rocca:                 37          44.8            41.1*           0*                17*           63*

Weatherford:     44          45.8*          39.3              3                  12            61

From my computer chair, these season numbers aren’t even close, and certainly don’t warrant a change from Rocca to Weatherford.  The only thing that can be said for Weatherford is that the Giants have given him more opportunities for punts, but the numbers clearly indicate that he’s done less with those.

No question that Rocca is the missing Redskins player on this list, but he’s still in the hearts and minds of Redskins Nation.

Thats typical. Redskins are always treated as an “also ran”.
