At Tight End, Byrd Is The Word

Don’t you know about the Byrd?  Truthfully, everybody knows that the Byrd is the word.

Satisfied with the blockers that the Redskins had on the team, head coach Mike Shanahan sought free agent tight end Dominique Byrd to be a playmaker on offense.

“He’s an athlete,” he said yesterday after practice. “We thought he was the best pass catching tight end out there.  He did a good job today in practice–he impressed me today.”

And Byrd has the resume to back it up.  In college, he had nearly 1,000 career receiving yards, and playing on a national championship squad at USC that featured three other future NFL receivers.  At the NFL Combine, Byrd balanced size and speed, with a 6-3, 255-lb frame, and 4.8 speed.

Byrd recorded the second-best stats of his career against the Redskins as a member of the Rams, hauling in two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown, in Week 16 of the 2006 season.  Since then, he has tried to get his career back on track, playing sparingly for the Cardinals and Seahawks, before the Redskins called him this week:

Byrd seems to fit right in with the “humble and hungry” theme that’s taken over the Redskins roster this year, and seems like a quality human being off the field.

In an interview with Ion, he discussed how his mother is his inspiration, and that kids should practice for their SAT’s:

Quality stuff.

During his time with the Seahawks training camp this summer, Byrd talked to ESPN 710 in Seattle about what it takes to make an NFL roster, and what he’s willing to do:

I think what’s gonna be most important for me to make the team, or to have that opportunity, is just to continue to get better and be able to help the team in whatever ways that I can.  Y’know, whether it’s punt or punt returns, y’know what I mean, and showing them that I am serious about this.  I want to take advantage of every opportunity that I get…just letting them know that I am serious.

As far as the hands are concerned, I’ve always felt confident about my hands, and I still work on that.  You can’t let anything slip if you’re a professional.  So that’s what I’m working on, is being a consummate professional.  And anything they ask me to do, just giving my best effort, and just making sure that I get the accountability and the reliability of the people around here and my teammates.  So they know that through the season, I’m gonna be that same guy.

The Redskins may not ask him to be a big playmaker in this offense, but he’ll be a valuable contributor if he can get his career back on track in Washington.
