Week 6 Power Rankings Roundup

Posted by Brian Tinsman on October 12, 2011 – 3:24 pm

From a comfortable armchair in their destination of choice, Redskins players had the glee of watching both the Eagles and Giants fall during last week’s bye week.

The Giants’ loss broke up the tie for first place in the NFC East, giving the Redskins sole possession of the top spot.  The Eagles’ loss dropped them further into the NFC East cellar, in preparation for this week’s Redskins matchup.  According to SI’s Peter King, the Eagles left a lot to be desired on the field against the Bills:

Nothing like an honest assessment.

In sitting tight at 3-1, the Redskins held steady, or in fact moved up most rankings.  Here’s the Week 6 rundown:

CBSSports.com gave the Redskins No. 8, holding steady from last week:

FoxSports.com gave the Redskins No. 10, holding steady from last week:

NBC/ProFootballTalk.com boosted the Redskins up five places to No. 12, up from 17 last week:

ESPN.com gave the Redskins No. 10, up from 12 last week:

NFC East blogger for ESPN.com, Dan Graziano, discussed the good fortunes of the Redskins bye week:

The bye was good to Washington, as four of the teams that had been in front of them lost and they jumped up two spots into the league’s top 10. Not a bad spot for a team that began the season ranked 28th in this poll. Now, when the Giants were here last week, I expressed some mild skepticism about their ability to hold the spot. I feel somewhat the same about Washington, though not as strongly. They run the ball better than the Giants do, and they play better defense. Their offense is intentionally vanilla, but they’ve committed the fewest penalties in the league and are second in the league in average time of possession. Basically, if everyone around them keeps being so wildly inconsistent, I like the Redskins’ chances to stay steady and take advantage of that. Right now, I’d probably rank the Raiders and Texans higher, and maybe the Titans. And the Cowboys did beat them, so you could make that case, too. But that’s nitpicking, and I’m not a voter, so it doesn’t matter what I think. The Redskins are a top-10 team in the Power Rankings, so enjoy that, Skins fans.

The Redskins file has officially been moved from the “Yeah, But” folder, to the “Show Me What You’ve Got” folder.  Games get bigger every week, but this is an opportunity to extend the divisional lead and bury  a divisional opponent.  This is the situation that the Redskins want to be in; now they need to seize the day.

You’re not kidding. This is going to be the Redskin’s toughest test so far this year. I’ve seen every Eagle’s game this year. Despite the Eagles problems they rack up the yards, make big plays, and put points on the board. Not to mention with this game their season is literally on the line.

HTTR!! Litmus test here. Do we have a killer instinct? If so, Philly is done for the year. We owe them big for the ass whoopin’ they administered last year. Pound the rock, pound the rock!!!!

The Redskins are establishing a solid ground and pound game versus a splash-play Eagles will make for a most intriguing match-up. I predict the Redskins will lead going into the forth quarter but can the Redskins control the ball taking time off the clock? Look like we will have to endure yet another nail bitter. HTTR
