This afternoon was the fourth annual All-Star Survivor Celebration at Redskins Park, which welcomed women that are currently battling breast cancer to come share in an afternoon of luxury.
Redskins tight end Chris Cooley and his wife Christy, were joined by Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Dan Snyder, to host the event. Tanya Snyder is a breast cancer survivor herself, having been diagnosed and treated in 2008. For obvious reasons, this event means a great deal to her.
“Today is about having fun and being inspired, and knowing that it’s going to be okay–hang in there,” she said. “A lot of these women, they have kids at home, they have a lot to fight for, and it is tough. It is tough to go through what they’re going through, and for them to have an enjoyable day, and even a life-changing day, we want to lift them up and get them through this hardship.”
Organized by Chris Cooley and the Washington Redskins Community Relations Department, the day featured makeup, hair and wig makeovers, as well as gifts of Gap jeans, custom pink Redskins jerseys, and tickets and field passes for Sunday’s game against the Eagles.
“Being a survivor, this is the therapeutic part, and also the surreal part of it,” Mrs. Snyder said. “I’m a big believer in the cause and certainly not meaning to be a statistic in it. But the truth of the matter is, it can affect each of us. Most of the people in the NFL have a story of a loved one that breast cancer has impacted.”
“The message has to continue to be clearly communicated to get early screening and you will have a much better outcome.”
Mrs. Snyder discussed how the Redskins have had a Think Pink initiative with the ZTA fraternity for 13 years. Over that time, she and her efforts have touched many lives, and have allowed her to learn many people’s stories.
“Several of the women are returning from last year, and we very much love to stay in connection with them,” she said. “Many of these women are awesome Redskins fans, so there’s so many different stories here today, and we love to here the outcomes, to know that they’re doing better.”
