Haslett Goes X’s and O’s On Orakpo

On a recent edition of FOX Sports’ Brian Billick’s “Coach Speak,” Billick sat down with Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett to discuss the success of linebacker Brian Orakpo.

Billick has had a lot of success with the 3-4 defensive end/linebacker hybrid, coaching Terrell Suggs for five years in Baltimore.  His conversation with Haslett had to do with Orakpo’s success in making the switch as well.

“We don’t make it real tough on, because obviously what he does best is rush the passer,” Haslett said.  “But when he does drop, we make it simple.”

Orakpo burst onto the scene in 2009 as a defensive end in the Redskins 4-3 defensive scheme, but had a minor sophomore statistical slump as he adjusted to Haslett’s 3-4 last year.  In 2011, he’s been a backfield terror, already amassing 11 tackles, 3.5 sacks, nine quarterback pressures, and two forced fumbles.

That part’s easy.  Haslett explains how he’s been able to adjust to coverage.

Hate the video post. Seems just like copy and paste to me. A lot of the stuff you do has been good, but we have a lot of good players on the team that fans have very little knowledge of. Would love to get more information on the new guys. How they are transitioning into the Redskins routines.(practices, film study, game time) Maybe throw in what they enjoy doing in the DMV. Video is ok, Twitter following is cool too but you have the dream job, dont be afraid to go beyond scratching the surface of our team. Keep of the good work!

Fair point, just going for variety today. I’ll do a little more digging when players are back tomorrow, don’t worry 🙂
