DeJon Gomes And His Sugar Glider, Ralph

Redskins safety DeJon Gomes considers himself an animal person, but “never had any pets, because my mom is scared of all of them.”

He had frogs when he was younger, but they died.  He had a beta fish once, but it died.

“I had a Beared Dragon, but it passed away while I was on vacation because my mom wouldn’t feed it.”

Sounds like Mom is serious about not liking pets.

But now that he’s on his own in northern Virginia, Gomes needed a furry companion.  But forget Whiskers and Fido–he went out and got a Sugar Glider.

“It’s a marsupial, and it’s similar to a flying squirrel,” he said.  ”I just got him last week, because they were selling them in the mall.”

Despite his experience with obscure pets, Gomes said that the next addition to his family will likely be more familiar.

“I’m gonna get a dog soon,” he said.  ”But I’m probably gonna wait until the offseason for when I have a little more time to train it.”
