As a freshman at the City College of San Francisco, Redskins safety DeJon Gomes was a star defender and helped lead the squad to a victory in the Junior College National Championships.

One of his teammates and close friends on the Rams, was a running back David “Doom” Henderson, a bright high school football star who rushed for over 5,600 yards in high school.  Like Gomes, coming out of the Bay area, he too had NFL aspirations.

“He always had a smile on his face,” Gomes remembered, sitting at his locker.  “He was a guy who was always ready to go out for practice, and have fun doing it.”

Even after Gomes transferred to Nebraska for his junior season, he remained close with Henderson, right through the day that he joined the Redskins.

But less than a month later, Henderson’s life was cut tragically short, by a shooting in his neighborhood in San Francisco.  After making the team earlier this month, Gomes responded by dedicating his rookie season to the life and memory of his fallen friend.

“Really, in his community, he didn’t have too many people that didn’t like him,” Gomes said quietly.  “Of course, there’s haters everywhere, and I guess the haters got the best of him in the end.  I just want to go out there and play in his memory.”
