Barry Cofield Admits He’s Looking [A Little] Past The Bucs

Posted by Brian Tinsman on August 31, 2011 – 6:07 pm

The fourth game of the preseason is a perennially-underrated matchup, considering it is one of the best games of the year.

Does it have the star power?  Usually not.  Does it have the cleanest execution of the game-plan?  Usually not.  But for some of these men, this is their last shot at a dream-job.  It’s the one game on the NFL calendar in which there is significant playing time for entire units of players that are playing for their careers.

You may not recognize the names, and there could be dozens of penalties, but you will see human desire personified by dozens of young men that fight for the ability to call themselves pro athletes.  And that makes it awesome.

But that situation doesn’t necessarily apply to all 80 men that suit up in Burgundy and Gold tomorrow.  Certainly, some of these players know that they are roster locks, and are looking ahead to the regular season.

“I’ve gotten some opportunities here in the preseason,” defensive lineman Barry Cofield said.  “I rushed some passes pretty well against Baltimore. On a scale of one-to-ten, if ten is a Pro Bowl level? I’ll say I’m at a seven.”

For Cofield in particular, the mental preparation time befor the Giants will be critical.

“Each week, each team brings a different battle and a different set of issues,” he explained.  “I’m gonna spend a lot more time watching tape. You get to a point of comfort when you’re in the same scheme, but it’s definitely gonna take some extra study.”

He continued: “I feel like I’m moving at a good clip. Each day is a little bit better and I feel like by the time the Giants roll into town I’ll be pretty much where I wanna be.”

Cofield couldn’t mask his excitement when he was asked about the Giants game.  No doubt there has been a big red circle around opening day since the day he signed in Washington.

“I am familiar with their scheme,” he said with a coy smile.  “But, it’s great that the Giants are Week 1 for many reasons for me. I’m definitely excited about that game. It’s my first time in a real game in front of the fans in Washington. I’m gonna be going off of adrenaline, and hopefully after the first play or so I can settle down.”

Given his ability to dominate offensive linemen, let’s hope he doesn’t settle down too much.

“Like I said I still got a lot of studying to do and ill start that this week, probably do that along with the Tampa studying and have over a week to get ready for the Giants.”

I hope that Cofield is polite and welcomes Eli Manning to Washington, upon his arrival.
