First Quarter Musings

Posted by Brian Tinsman on August 25, 2011 – 8:49 pm

The first quarter got off to a fast–and fiesty–start.  DeAngelo Hall looks to be continuing his role as a terror in the secondary, picking off Joe Flacco and weaving his way through traffic for a touchdown.  Graham Gano nailed the extra point, and a pretty substantial fight broke out in the middle of the field that involved most of both teams.

The euphoria was short-lived, however, as rookie defensive end Jarvis Jenkins went down clutching his right knee.  It’s been announced as a sprained knee, but we’ll know more after the game.

This could potentially be the dreaded injury that any team wants to avoid in the preseason.  Jenkins is behind Adam Carriker and Stephen Bowen on the depth chart, but figures to see lots of playing time with the way he’s played so far.

Here’s hoping that this is not that injury.

Reed Doughty had a smart play late in the quarter to sniff out an end-around by speedy receiver Torrey Smith.  Dropped him for a seven-yard loss, which stalled the Ravens drive.

The Redskins switched quarterbacks from Rex Grossman to John Beck after two series on offense.  On the first play, Beck slung the ball down the sidelines for Anthony Armstrong.  This is Armstrong’s biggest involvement in the preseason thus far, and it’s good to see him get up to speed.  Two plays later, Tim “Highlight Reel” Hightower reeled off a 37-yard touchdown scamper.

He has 50 yards in the first frame.

I’m not sure which was more impressive: the fact that he maneuvered his way through a traffic snarl at the line of scrimmage, or that he put the pedal to the metal and outran safeties and corners on his way to the endzone.  Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski had the angle on Hightower to knock him out of bounds, but simply could not cut him off once Hightower got in the open field.

Keyaron Fox has three quick tackles in a start for London Fletcher, and rookie Ryan Kerrigan has added another sack to his resume.

Redskins are up with momentum, 14-0.

    Hightower faster than I thought.

    My musings at half: we should be up 21-3. Two stops on 3rd down were nullified by penalties, allowing both Raven TD drives to continue. We obviously have some talent and can play with the big boys of the AFC, but these are the difference makers ibetween a playoff run this season, or mediocrity…

    Why isn’t Royster playing? Confused…

    @Bill-
    That’s a good question, and it’s something that probably comes to a lot of factors. He ran well against Pittsburgh, but has been the forgotten man the last two weeks. I wouldn’t read anything into it though, and I would expect him to see the field against Tampa Bay. I’ll keep you up to date on what I hear
